Questions about Winner
Hello all...
I applied for a job in Winner last night. I have no inklin wether I stand a chance of getting it.... I've also applied ther ein the past, but am curious.
What is Winner like? What are people like? What is the general overall attitude in town? Hows the economy doing out there?
Are people there welcoming to new comers if you respect them and don't try and push your ways on them?
Who provides cable tv, internet, landline and cell phone service out there?
What grocery stores are there? What kind of stores/shopping is in town? Is everything close by or spread out?

I'm not very familiar with Winner, but we've been there. Have you ever been there before? If not, you may want to visit before accepting employment there.

My grandparents were born and raised in Winner, and they loved the town. Today, Winner is a somewhat large town by South Dakota standards. I think it may have around 10,000 people. There is a large grocery store, Pamida, a couple dollar stores, and every fast food restaurant you would need.
I drove through there at the beginning of this summer and saw a bunch of people at the Drive-In Movies. I thought that was pretty neat! Rapid City doesn't even have a Drive-In.

Winner, South Dakota (SD) Detailed Profile - relocation, real estate, travel, jobs, hospitals, schools, crime, news, sex offenders
Winner has less than 3,000 people according to city-data.
Tripp County is located slightly west of the Missouri River which classifies the town as "west river."
It is probably not that far of a drive to Pierre based on the location of the town.

I'm very aware of the information contained on the City-Data.com pages but I like to ask the "local folk' as they usually have a better idea....

Winner is a quaint little town and you would really enjoy it as long as you had the "little town" thoughts. It's not going to have the marveled stage shows. But it will have neighbors. It's a small town that has really grown (as far as South Dakota standards are concerned) But it keeps it's small town atmosphere and friendliness.
If you keep that in mind, you will have a blast in Winner.

I like having "neighbors".. the kinda people you actually know rather then just living next to. I love small towns and that's mainly where I've applied for work.
I applied in a small town in Eastern North Dakota town too... so we'll see.

Winner is located far enough west that the overall climate is rather dry and semi-arid like. It is in the Great Plains so be prepared for strong winds during all seasons. Winter is typically more moderate in this part of SD compared with the far eastern areas of the state based on climate data. Small towns in the Great Plains have plenty of hard working friendly people that love to strike up conversations with you.

I grew up in Winner. I lived there most of my life until a couple years ago. I miss alot about Winner. Some of the people are great, some aren't. Get used to other people knowing your business, and alot of gossip. That is seriously the only downside, I really miss the people and the random everyday kindness. Alot of people have lifelong friendships, but welcome newcomers. Your attitude and work ethnic get you far there. Respect is a big word there, I miss that the most. It is an easy place to make friends, most people do the majority of their serious shopping in Rapid City, Sioux Falls, and Pierre. I spent most of my money in Winner at the grocery store, or convenient store. I am pleasantly surprised to see it is growing. Most of my family still live and thrive in Winner. I miss knowing my neighbors, and knowing that they are looking out for me. It is alot slower and more personal there. Real connections not just alot of people looking out for themselves and doing their own thing. I love the city for me, but not for my kids. Money makes the decisions there, and alot of the same names have their fingers in everything. That gets old, but I think most towns are like that though. It only has 3000 people, and within two days everyone in town will know your name. If you will be working at KWYR, even sooner than that. Good people. Wow I miss the small towns, and the security. Job market isn't great, but I never had a problem finding a job. Plus it is CHEAP!!! I used to think I was bored, nothing to do. Now I miss the calmness, and low stress. There are still problems there, just different ones. If you have a specific question, I would be happy to help if I can.

Everything is very close, I think the town is like 3 miles long. Cell phones are Verizon Wireless, or Alltel (I am not positive about the second one...it is whoever bought out Cell One). Shopping...two dollar stores, Pamida, Furniture store and Main Street stores (Andy's Jewelry, Bakery, Embroidery Shop, Computer Shops, Hunting store, ect.) shopping is not great in Winner. Two grocery stores, one on each side of town Sooper Dooper to the East, and Winner Westside to the West. Landline, and internet will be Goldenwest Communications.
