Should i move to Yankton, SD?
I am a 24 year old single woman, with no children, yet. I have been living in georgia my entire life, but lately it seems as if it's time for me to move on. My sister an aunt moved to Yankton a few years ago, and have been trying to get me to move there too. I would like to move there but i don't want to make the wrong decision. I am planning on going back to school as well, and noticed that they have 2 schools very close by. Could someone give me their opinion on how it is really living in yankton. I would really like to have an idea before i pick up and move there.

Sharlean, I don't live in Yankton, but have been there often throughout my life. It's a nice town and one of my favorite things about it is that it's right along the River. They have a nice beach there. Some of the areas have older buildings and homes, but it's just cause the town of Yankton is very old. It was our first state Capitol.
Yankton, South Dakota (SD) Detailed Profile - relocation, real estate, travel, jobs, hospitals, schools, crime, news, sex offenders
I don't know whether you've see the above info for Yankton or not, but there's quite a bit of valuable information there for you. As you can see, the unemployment rate is low, as it is in the entire eastern part of our state. Our state also has a very low crime rate compared to many parts of the country. We're well below average.
I honestly don't see how you could go wrong with your move since you already have family there. I've spent my entire life in So. Dak. and my only problem with it is the COLD winter. But as I've said before, I'm the official winter weather whiner for the Dakotas.

I have two cousins that live in Yankton. They love the town and they find it to be very convenient and close to larger cities for other needs. The only complaint that they have is that due to the psychiatric hospitals, there is a fair amount of "unstable" people let into the community. They are looking for a home in Vermillion now, but it is onlly because of career reasons.
USD is in Vermillion and there are many schools nearby in Sioux Falls. I am not sure about schools in Yankton itself.

Yankton is a nice town, but it's small at under 20,000 people. But considering that you are 24 and single, you might want to look at Sioux Falls with 150,000 people. They have more to do for a young person and you are only 80 miles from Yankton. (Another larger place close by to look at is Sioux City, IA with about 100,000 people)
One thing to consider, S Dakota (and the whole upper Midwest) gets VERY cold in winter. In Georgia you never get weather below zero, but in SD it can be below zero for weeks at a time. Have you ever felt 30 below zero? It can be painful if you aren't used to it and it happens frequently in SD. But like they say, -30 keeps the riff raff out!!
That said, the quality of life is nice in SD and if you are looking to start a family someday then SD would probably be the place to do it. Low crime, low cost of living and low unemployment make it a desirable place to relocate.

South Dakota is a nice place to raise a family. Yankton, however has left an ugly scar on my heart. Some 19 years ago my sister in-law and niece were MURDERED in their beds in Yankton. The guy who killed them walked away from the MENTAL hospital, and because he was a sentenced to the hospital through the court system he was not sound enough to stand trial for the murders of my family memebers.
In fairness though, the town has a great college in Mt. Marty.

OMG Stevie, I am SO sorry. I remember that incident well. It was horrible. It was a very isolated incident for Yankton, yet absolutely awful. It's way too many years late, BUT your family has my condolences.

I have been to Yankton a number of times when going to Colorado and Kansas and also when I lived in Vermillion and interviewing for a job there. I had postive experiences with the community.
Yankton is clean and friendly town for the most part. It is an inexpensive place and is an easy drive to Sioux City and Sioux Falls. The city is 14,000-15,000 people with beautiful Missouri River to the south and Lewis and Clark Lake (a dammed up lake on the Missouri behind Gavins Point Dam) to the west. Lewis and Clark has a lot of recreation and is a wonderful place to camp, hike, bike, swim, boat, and relax. There is a new US Highway 81 bridge that is being built and will replace the old Meridan Bridge, which will be turned into a pedestrian bridge.
Yankton has a lot of history and charm to it. It also has a good selection fo restaurants for its size and has a smoke free bar. It has a nice Wal-Mart and K-Mart and it's Hy-Vee store is also nice.
There are a few younger people in Yankton. It has Mount Marty College and USD, in Vermillion, is not too far away. Sioux Falls has many people in their 20s, which is also in my age group. Sioux City has a sizable number too, but not as much as Sioux Falls.
If I moved outside of the Sioux Falls metro area, Yankton along with Mitchell would be towards top of my list for South Dakota communities.

I'm Not Sure If I Can Ever Get Used To It, But I Will Bundle Up, Because I Heard It Is Beautiful In The Summer.

Sharlean, how nice of you to come back and let us know that you moved there. I wish you the best of luck and it's good to hear you're happy there. Oh, and you sound like me about the weather~I don't like winter here.
