you might want to rent a motel room
there are a few places that'll rent by the week. just to get you by until the college and vo-tech kids go home.
or see if your new employer will ask around for you.

Welcome to Mitchell. I think you'll like it here. The name of the local newspaper is the Daily Republic. I just went through the apartment ads and there are several apartments listed there. A few of them request no pets, but most of them don't say anything. As the previous poster said, there will soon be a lot of apartments for rent when school is out. If you'd like anymore info and it's allowed, I'd be happy to post phone numbers that are in the paper for contact info about apartments.

Mitchell or Huron??
Hello,
Which town would be better Mitchell,SD or Huron,SD?? What are the most crimes and what are the least crimes in Mitchell?? Jammie mention that Huron,SD has auto thefts. How much are the homes and apartments in Mitchell,SD?? I know Mitchell has a Cabela's, Corn Palace and other attractions. How is the traffic in Mitchell,SD. Are there any back-ups at times or not?? I am just checking.
Thanks!!
Chris

Chris, personally, I prefer Mitchell. I've always felt the people are friendlier here, but that may have something to do with always living in this area. Mitchell has always been our "big town". But we have lived in Mitchell now for the past 10 years. Mitchell seems to be much more progressive then Huron. It seems that jobs are more plentiful here and just more events. Mitchell and Huron are probably pretty comparable where crime is concerned. The national average for crime is based on about a 335 and all the towns in this area aren't even half that. The crimes around here are normally not violent crimes. It can be things like car theft, embezzlement, shoplifting, etc. As far as rape or murder or armed robbery are concerned, that's VERY rare here. I'm not sure what kind of traffic you're used to, but Mitchell doesn't have traffic jams. Believe me, if I can navigate this city, almost anyone can.

As a native of Huron, SD since I was in diapers, I can probably count the number of auto thefts in the past 20 years on one hand, and Huron is growing actually quite well. We opened a new turkey plant in the last 6 months, Walmart opened last month on the south side, a HUGE runnings farm & fleet store will be opening soon right next door, and a Menards accross the street. What is Mitchell doing that is so much more progressive than Huron??
Yes, our college closed, big deal. This packing plant that you were talking about that closed a few years ago... DAKOTA PORK CLOSED IN THE LATE 80's, where have you been?? Not in, or around Huron for sure. I am not sure why you don't like Huron, but do a little research before you give your expert opinion to someone that is looking for facts.

I said, "Personally, I prefer Mitchell". Flynn asked about the crime rate and I told him what the crime rate is around here. I did not specifically say that Huron has more auto thefts. I did not say that Huron isn't growing. Mitchell has more to offer in employment and I won't list unless someone is actually in search of that info.
KSKH, your post proves my point. You flew off the handle before you reread the thread. Thank you and have a nice day.

Traffic in Mitchell? Where?
Listen... for anyone concerned with moving to south dakota. Crime, traffic, major school problems....these are things of the large city's. We simply don't have those issues here. Wasn't Sioux Falls listed by Forbes as the best city in the nation to live - twice?
Thats a perfect reflection of all our towns. Granted, SF is so much bigger with everything, but when you get right down to the real nuts and bolts of a community, it's really the same.
However, there is something to consider when moving here. What kind of lifestyle do you have? Go out a lot? Do you need lots of attractions and things to spend money on? You like to stay at home?
When me and my wife lived in northern Virginia, we said 'Ya know, this place would be a lot of fun... if we were single, and didn't have children.'
South Dakota is the place for us. EXCESSIVELY low crime, no traffic, you really get to know your neighbors (instead of living in fear of them like other places), and it's really just calm. You'll find out that we have everything to offer that the big cities do... but as I found out.... we get there in 5 minutes instead of 2 hours of traffic hell. Thus, after a while, it just 'seems' like there's nothing to do because you really just get there quicker, and get done with what you need, faster.
As far as Huron and Mitchell. I felt that both towns are about the same. Huron is growing, and so is mitchell... so it's a wash. The one thing that Mitchell has over Huron, is it's closer to Sioux Falls. You can hit the interstate (with no traffic jams) and go do all that big shopping. But both towns are growing in different ways, and each as something to offer.

Stitch, that's a very good post. You're right. We are so lucky here in so many ways. The only thing I'd change about SD is I'd make the winters MUCH milder.

Good point. Actually, the past few years have shown quite mild winters in regards to the standard. Quite odd.
But i'm sure that won't last for long.
