I was told today that the pretzel store outside the old Target has had a sales decrease of more than 50% in the last month. MasterCuts is also suffering. "Regulars" were still parking outside Target and going in to the mall thru the service entrance to the right of Target. But mall security put a stop to it and told them they had to park at a customer entrance.
Has anyone else heard anything about how the mall is doing?

I have a friend that works at Rushmore Mall and he says that they've been really dead since Target moved out. I guess ProImage Sporting Goods hardly gets any business anymore. They're going to see how the holiday season pans out but if it stays really slow a lot of stores will be looking into spaces at Rushmore Crossing. I think the Rushmore Mall will become a "dead mall" if it doesn't get remodeled or get some bigger drawing cards. Maybe a skating rink or a huge arcade would make it better.
It's so old and ugly that I personally think they should plow 'er down and build a better mall. Maybe with adjacent condos and a park of some sort.

Fortunately, the Empire Mall is not dead, but there is one wing that seems dead and had that feeling for the past 10-15 years (one that has the music/CD store and the military offices). There are quite a few vacant areas and has been that way for quite some time. Other than that, there has not been too many other dead areas.
I have been in the Rushmore Mall a few times and it could use some updates to it. Why not have part of it as an outdoor shopping complex and part of it indoors and the mall to reinvent itself. Worth an idea.
Danny, I think the future of shopping complexes are mixed use facilities. Check out www.zonarosa.com. Zona Rosa is a shopping complex in Kansas City, MO that has lofts mixed in with smaller stores, restuarants, and larger stores such as Dick's Sporting goods. I have been there about a year and a half ago and though it was a neat concept. The shopping centers are designed to promote more walking and be more community-oriented. If they had a similar concept in Rapid and SF, it would be a sight to be seen. If one throws in traffic circles, it will confuse the heck out of some including the older people. I personally like the roundabout/traffic circle concept and have done fine when I used them in the past. Falcon Heights, a proposed development that is expected to come up in the southeast part of Sioux Falls is supposed to be a high-density development that will incorporate shopping and is designed to be a walkable area. This would have similarities with Zona Rosa, but probably with more residential.

Wow, no posts here in a month. So looks like dirtwork out in front of the Rushmore Crossing by the interstate started...maybe a restaurant finally?? Might just be utility work too but who knows. Lots of surveying going on between Furniture Row and Scheels. Maybe the next phase will push forward this spring after all.
Anyone notice the new building going up across Elk Vale Rd from Watiki water park? Looks like some sort of strip mall or something--- Volvo Truck used to be there a while back between the railroad tracks and the off ramp.

there are a couple stores out there close to I90. I remember Verizon being one of them. It's just a tiny strip of stores.
The two new buildings on Elk Vale look like more hotels to me. Notice all the windows in a row and no doors.

Yay! We can bring this thread back! I noticed the new construction beginning too and I saw the new buildings going up on Elk Vale. I know for sure that the one by McDonald's is going to be a hotel. My barber's family owns it. I'm not sure about the other one but I'd guess it to be a hotel too. ! wonder which ones they are.
We need our RC Journal member to do some investigating!

Uh, oh, Police Commissioner DannyBanany turned on the bat-light.
So, we have a hotel by the waterpark, and some dirt work in the store/restaurant strip in Rushmore Crossing?
Hmm. Guess I'll go put the cape on...
