Hello all,
We are a short 2 1/2 weeks away from our arrival in SD!! Exciting times ahead for our family! We found a rental in Custer just outside of town, but now the question is what schools to put our 3 girls in. I will be working at the hospital in Custer. The plan is to eventually buy land and build a home, but we aren't sure if that will be in Hill City or Custer. We don't want to have to move the girls to a different school in a year or two. Soooooo, our dilema is whether to live in Custer for the next year but send them to Hill City because we will build in Hill City, or just put them in Custer schools and build in Custer. I've heard that electricity rates and property taxes are CRAZY in Custer, but not sure if it's the same for Hill City. I do know they are in 2 different counties so maybe that makes a difference? Hill City is attractive simply because it's that much closer to Rapid City for those occasional shopping trips into town. Would love input from anyone familiar with both towns or anyone who has knowledge of the schools, taxes, elec rates, etc. Thanks in advance for your help!
Black Hills Power provides electricity to both so the electric rates should be the same. Many municipalities are shifting their taxes to the water bill and calling it service fee's. Those fee's can vary a lot from one community to another. That is about all I can help with. It sounds like you will have some time to check it all out once you get moved into your rental.
Actually, if they are outside of town, Black Hills Electric Coop will be the power company. There is no natural gas service that I am aware of - most folks have propane tanks or wood stoves. If you are inside city limits in Custer county, your property taxes are higher, but the rest of the county is more on-pace with state averages, from what I understand.
Custer schools are average, but not exceptional. Depends on what specifics you require. My daughter will likely be taking classes online to supplement what she is getting in school to make sure she is fully prepared for college. She is just going into 8th grade this year, so we will have time...=) We do like the staff at the schools - wish the administration would get their act together, but I don't think that's unusual for schools anywhere.
