Sturgis, a town of about 6,500 in the Black Hills of western South Dakota, fills to overflowing each August as motorcyclists come to town to celebrate the wonder of life on two wheels. The 73rd rally got underway Monday and is featuring the usual menu of food, music, merchandise and, of course, bikes, bikes and more bikes to admire and ogle.
JFC... The pain in the ass that is the rally, it is hardly a newsworthy story.
For the locals, it is not newsworthy, but name one other event, of even 5 other events combined, that bring in those kinds of tourist dollars.
When I lived in the hills, we dreaded tourist season, simply due to the added traffic and of course, the added traffic accidents. We didn't think the tourist bucks did anything for us directly, but in reality it did. It was the wages others made that trickled into the economy.
How has the accidents been this year? Fights out in the hills (I never worried a out the fights at the Talley, just when they brought it elswhere), DUI's?
Got me. I am on the Oregon Coast, headed for Seattle. By the time I get back to Hot Springs, those bikers should be gone. I understand they are bringing a lot of rain this year. That is good.

uh
The rains have mostly been south of I 90. The more notable item is the fact that it is August 10th and the grass on hills is still green.
As far as arrests, I think they are up this year. Notably, well, not really a surprise was the arrest of Robbie Knievel. Crashes have been somewhat average. The week started out pretty busy.
The traffic has been obnoxious. I am amazed at the number of people who ride their bikes to trailer week. seeing how some people ride, it is evident that $50,000 and 50 miles doesn't make these people bikers.
So, they are like seagulls. They fly in, make lots of noise and leave.
Cool. My wife wants to spend an extra day in the Big Horns. Perhaps that is a good idea.
uh

Hmmm. Big Horns. I know something about the Big Horns. I'm setting here looking at them, out my window.
