No need to get off your soap box. I grew up hearing stories about Wounded Knee 2. I remember the Whiteclay ralleys and riots in the late 90's, that was one of the few times I remember my father and grandfather keeping loaded guns close at hand.

I have long belived that Mr. Mean was not in it for "his" people, but for himself.

Unhappy Just a Thought

If the people of the Lakota Reservations are no longer American citizens, and the treaties are no longer in force, what does that mean?

No more Federal dollars for public education, college scholarships included. No more Welfare, Worker's Compensation, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, nor government rules on dissemination of the monies provided to or originating from the reservation. No more social workers visiting. No more teachers. No more roads, no more government buildings, no more infrastructure assistance, health care, no access to CDBG grants to enhance drainage or water source development or sewer development.

All states are dependent to a certain degree on Federal dollars, whether they are brought home in pork-barrels by representatives in Congress, or solicited and disseminated by local organizations like Councils Of Governments (COGs). If the reservations ever received special considerations simply because they were reservations, that is at an end.

Private investments may back out too; anyone who sponsored investment in any Indian maintenance of the production of art or industry won't get their tax writeoffs any more and would have no reason to stay. The businesses or families involved in such would have to stand or fall on their own merits and productivity.

If people have to ascertain passports to go to Indian Reservation Casinos or to purchase items on reservations, they will go elsewhere. If passports are necessary for Indians to travel off of the reservation, than thousands who make their money traveling from powwow to show, selling their wares or performing, will be handicapped from making their money. These introductions to their attempts to continue their culture will die.

Way to go, Russell. If your dreams go thru, you will have killed off an entire people - the older people whom you are supposed to revere, the children whom you insist need more, and an entire culture that will lose respect and contact with the outside world.

SC, you raised some very good points. It was just not thought through and there's only a few who will gain out of it somehow and I'll bet one of them is named "Russell".

I guess I don't exactly understand how it will work out then cause I don't really understand how it works out now. The Sioux are actually a Sovereign Nation, yet the United States does provide all the things that you mentioned. Maybe it's considered like aid to a foreign country??? Honestly, I'm just not really sure how it works.

With all due respect to what happened to the Native American Indians; what have the reservations done for them?

Many other cultures around the world suffered far worse (the Jews during WW II come to mind along with the German Gentiles, Japanese, etc.) yet all of the above cultures rebuilt themselves into powerhouses within one generation.

Even the Irish; as badly as the English treated them, remember the Potato Famine of ca. 1848 as well as Oliver Cromwell---------'something' changed in Irish culture just recently and today the Emerald Isle is a solid First World economic powerhouse with a per capita income higher than the USA.

Too there are many non 'Rez' American Indian people who have done well as in avoiding alcohol, working hard, being frugal, etc. And; that is not counting the untold numbers of White and Black people with 'indigenous' blood who are also successful.

Sorry for my rant but; taking personal responsibility starts at home via education and not just college.

Why advance yourself when you could just get a handout? The Jews weren't given handouts from the Nazis that conquered them, they had to rebuild themselves.

America has conquered the Native Americans perfectly. We take everything from them and then keep them "barely comfortable".

And; what makes the indigenous people any different that any other race/ethnicity that had been dumped on?

All peoples have suffered in one manner or another through history.

Admittedly; the common denominator seems to be 'Middle Class' values------read that sobriety, frugality, education (read that not just book learning), punctuality as well as delayed gratification. People who come across as 'ghetto' tend not to display the above traits.

There you have it.

Since it may be best to not have several threads of these controversies, I decided to add this to the already existing thread. It's just another battle in the ongoing disagreements that have been around all these years.

What happens to the Casino's?

My take on this one is that several times, the reservation was diminished. Each time an "Agreed" upon treaty or deal was reached, money exchanged hands and was accepted by both parties. So each time, the boundaries were taken in. Seems pretty straight forward. You own 11,000,000 acres, and sell half of it, you can't come back years later and say, "My land used to go out to that road so there for, that land is still mine even though I sold it."

But this is included in the Lakota pulling out of the treaties. What happens to this, and does it include the original 11 million acres?
