Question regarding Pierre
Why does this city consistently, year after year, get up to 110 degrees, while the rest of the state is considerably cooler (except for the occasional triple digit reading in Rapid City)

I'm not sure where you get your weather information but more places than Pierre top out over 100 in the summer. Is "considerably cooler" 5 or 10 degrees or something more significant?

In the past 7 or 8 years, Pierre has been in a drought. When the weather is drier, it is easier to get warmer air temps. Pierre is generally drier than areas east of the state. The eastern part of the state is more humid, thus limiting to some extent how high the air temperature gets. Often times, it feels just as hot in Sioux Falls or Aberdeen as Pierre and points west due to the heavier humidity.

Actually, I believe the record high was somewhere near Buffalo, SD. In the northwest part of the state. A ways away from Pierre.

From my memory, it is Usta and is in Perkins County. I was astonished at the record high being at 120 degrees. But, Pierre was at 117 degrees that day. Ouch, that is hot.

That's it~I couldn't remember the name of the town, but Usta did hold the old record for a high. That was tied last summer and I believe it was in northwestern So. Dak. Yup, that was a bit toasty. But like you all mentioned, Rapid City can have 100 degrees and not feel any warmer then Sioux Falls does at 90 degrees. And yes, Pierre does seem to generally be higher then a lot of areas of the state. Chamberlain is often warmer then here, too and I'm guessing it may have something to do with the River running through both towns????
