Kbear - You are making me so hungry . I haven't had a good kielbasa in 10 years!!! We're kind of making due down here in AZ on the sausage eating front as we found a market that does a very decent job as far as brats and such are concerned. And the thought of a Kringle - OMG - we used to get them straight from the bakery in Racine, WI (I am originally from WI).
Anyway, sorry for digressing. I so far have been to Rapid City and loved it. We're getting set to visit Sioux Falls and are really looking forward to it. I am sure when we move that we'll visit North Dakota as well as I've heard a lot of great things about that state as well. I've been through both states as a kid and liked what I saw a lot!

Kuchen~that's our official state dessert. If you can't find anyone who sells it in Sx. Falls, head for Scotland. Someone who's last name is Pietz was a farmer and was disabled after a back surgery so he opened a sort of bakery or something. My understanding is all they make is kuchen. You may want to check in the bakery at your local grocery stores. He sells it at one store in Mitchell.
Oh sorry....kinda got off topic here, didn't I? I'd guess people in No. Dak. eat kucken, too.

We bought the kuchen from Scotland in a grocery in Mobridge this summer. I thought it was odd that it came from so far away, but this explains why. Thanks for sharing the info.

There is a bakery in Pollock north of Mobridge. My folks have some friends who like that * confection. They either make a road trip or have it shipped.

SMJ Ventures LLC in Rapid City, SD, South Dakota - Local Business Information for SMJ Ventures LLC in Rapid City, South Dakota
This is what I found for RC when I did a search for kuchen in your area.
It also looks like Pietz's kuchen has expanded to a huge area. Good for them~ I can personally tell you their kuchen is good.

I have heard that South Dakota is the only state where the population is going down.

South Dakota's population has grown. I think there are several states that have shrunk. Michigan comes to mind. North Dakota has lost population in the past but I'm not sure about recently.
