You know you live in SDAK when a the mailman delivers a letter, adressed to Debey Huber (maiden name)...So, the next day, I waited @ the mailbox, and asked him HOW he knew that was me???(I'm a ''transplant'' to Sanborn County).....His answer was ''Your Mom told me!" I asked how that was??????''well, she always puts her return address as Grandma Huber, when she sends the kids letters. ....LOL!

If you finish decorating your house at Chrismastime and you have some lights leftover, so you decorate the neighbor's house... you might be from South Dakota!
GUILTY! I did this!

How about this one!
If you leave your Christmas lights up until Spring because it's too cold out and the wind is blowing, you're probably from South Dakota!
(We use to put up our Christmas lights on any day that was slightly warm after Halloween and keep them up well past Christmas!)

A new twist!
Ok so if you
1. Buy an Eddie Bauer Parka that protects you to -40F and matching boots and a matching sleeping bag to carry with you in your car in case you get stranded in a blizzard......
and
2. You buy an alternative heating source for your home like a kerosene heater...........
and
3. You carry the emergency kit in your car with an empty coffee can, candle, candy bar, flashlight etc................
and
4. You get snow shoes thinking this will help you get around in the winter.....
and
5. You put a block heater on all your vechicles...............
and
6. You have NEVER USED any of these items (except maybe the candy bar but only because you got hungry driving around Rapid City) and they are still in their original packaging because as a wise Native South Dakotan would tell you.....
" Where in the world would you go if it was -40F with the wind chill or even
-10F and if there was a blizzard forecast!!"
If this is all true then you probably moved to South Dakota from Florida like we did in 1994 and yes, we did all of the above and MORE!
LOL

You don't have a thermometer. You just put the dog out and wait 3 minutes. If you have to go out and bust him loose from the tree, it's chilly.

Pammy, I didn't realize you had been from Fla. The quality of life up here is good, but I'm surprised that since you've lived in two nice and warm states, that you're coming back up here.

Oh there's no comparison Jammie! It's one thing to go on vacation in FL and quite another thing to live there. Dh and I are both in the mental health/substance abuse field and after 2 years in South Dakota, we tried living in FLorida again (near West Palm Beach) My husband left his job in Florida and went back to South Dakota after 2 months. I had to wait a little longer to come back because I had committed to a job but as soon as it was over I went back to South Dakota too. It's a whole other world down there (if you're living and working etc) Fine for vacation though! My Mom lives there too (in Ft. Myers) and a few years ago I went there to visit her during high season (winter) and literally got stuck in the Walmart parking lot because I had pulled out of my parking space and two cars were fighting over my space and literally blocked me in so I couldn't move anywhere, finally someone had to give in and let me out and then I had to make a left turn out of the parking lot onto a very busy road. After a long time and noone would let me turn, I had to turn right and go several miles and make a U-turn The whole experience practically drove me to tears and I vowed never to go again in the winter or at least to just stay put in my hotel or at my mom's! The beauty and tranquility of SD is worth putting up with the crazy winters and Spring! Take care!

Pammy, thank you so much for that evaluation. It's kind of funny cause the last time we were down there, we didn't do the tourist thing as much as actually talking to people about their lives down there. It seemed that employers had so little respect for their employees because they are so dispensable. Something else I found unreal were all the temp jobs and people actually were taking them. Another thing is that even if you're hired permanently and full time, it takes 3 to 6 months to qualify for benies. Here you generally start at day one. I also understand that many places don't stick to their word and as soon as your probation is up and you'd qualify, they drop your hours to just below full time.
One of the gals in a restaurant was telling us she was greatful for her job because it helped her buy a home. I figured she must make a fortune there, but she said she had bought a mobile for 1,000 and at least she had shelter. She said it was in rough shape and the floors were so bad in it, but it was a place to live. She had no food in her fridge and lived from night to night on the tips she made. That story wasn't isolated. There seem to be quite a few homeless down there and they're willing to work, but some don't have a high school diploma so they can't even get jobs like doing dishes. They are treated like dirt by so many people including the police. I know that some down there seemed to believe it was the fault of the person themselves for not becoming educated and taking control of their lives. There may be a bit of truth to it, but since when are only the educated, successful people considered to be good enough to live in a home or have something to eat?
I absolutely love their weather and some areas are so beautiful. But I think I kind of have an understanding of what you're saying. So what are your feelings on Tx? We've never been there.
