West Texas has the "feel" of South Dakota in a way in the sense that it is not crowded, the people are friendly, you can get your business done relatively quickly and simply, you only have to drive a few miles to be totally isolated--you can look up in the sky and actually see the stars at night except one thing is missing: the beauty of the Black Hills! Yes, it's completely flat here and of course the weather is much warmer. There are plenty of trees in the city but you travel out in the country and it's dry, flat, lots of brush/tumbleweeds etc. It's drier here too, not much in precipitation. The wind is much like SD though--it can get very windy here too and kick up the dust. Also unemployment is very low here. The main industry is oil and gas (and actually alternative fuels is a growing industry as well) so unemployment is very low here. It is even difficult for the police force to recruit new officers because they too are competing with the gas/oil fields. Maybe the people who live in SD in the summer and then travel South for part of the winter have the right idea!! You are smart to try out Florida before you actually would move there. It really is different. Take care and nice " chatting " with you!!
Pam

Pammybear is dead on about Florida. I live just outside of Tampa, and I HATE it here. Florida is extremely over-rated. Wonderful if you are a tourist, hell if you live here. My husband loves it, so i guess I am stuck

I'll trade you. I love the warmth and humidity and the palms and the beach, etc.

A co-worker of mine decided to retired to Florida with his wife last year. They actually ended up hating living there, and moved back here to SD. Kinda odd to me too, but I've never been to Florida.

Ok Jammie...any day! I am rarin' to go LOL!
Mjgustafson, I guess it does seem odd for RETIRED folks to dislike Florida, because thats what Tampa Bay area basically consists of...retirees! What didnt they like about it? I'm curious.
I am 36 years old, so by no means am I near retirement age. I'm also not into the nightclub scene anymore (Ybor City) which is really only the other thing to do here other than the beaches and Disney. Like I said, Florida is very over-rated. Educational system is a joke, the pay is disturbingly low, housing costs are very high (example: St Petersburg FL a 900 sqft house postage stamp size yard in a crummy ghetto neighborhood would sell around 200,000) not to mention our homeowners insurance...maybe you all have heard about that in the newspapers??
Anyway, this is the SD forum not FL
I've never been to SD but I imagine that its a very peaceful, calm way of life.
Am I right?

Mustang, you're right. It's very calm and peaceful and unpopulated here compared to Fla. The people up here are friendly, but I've always thought that they're friendly in certain parts of Fla., too, especially St. Petersburg.
It's very different here though and I'm not sure why. Of course our weather is totally different, but it just has a different "feel" up here then down there. Part of it is that we have a lot of wide open country and Fla. seems to have mostly cities or towns. Our employers treat us better up here then they must down there. We got to hear some sad things of how some employees are treated when we were there. We have a lot less crime. I know there's more cause it's like a different world and I can't quite pinpoint all of it. Oh, don't be shocked that you'll find most houses and apartments up here made of wood. That's quite different from there. If you can get accustomed to our winters, you'd probably like it here.

I'm sure I would! Winters would take ALOT of getting used to LOL! I'm cold if its 70 or below! Do you know if natural gas residential or commercial piping and/or propane delivery is a decent size industry in SD? Thats what my husband does. Or would you happen to know of any good links as far as jobs and homes go?

Mustang, I'm not really sure why they didn't like it...probably like you said...the insane costs for housing, bad educational systems... I guess it was too much of a culture shock to them...
On the contrast, a friend from high school found a good job in a hospital in Orlando and loves it down there.

Mustang, what area are you looking at? We can help you with the links to the local papers if you tell us the towns you're interested in.
I'm not sure if many people still heat with propane unless some people in the country still do. But natural gas is the number one heating source here so there's bound to be employment in that field.
Yup, I like my temps to be above 70, too. It gets very cold here and some people like it and others (ME) don't.

Perhaps Rapid City....around that general area. What is the bigger of the two cities: Rapid City or Sioux Falls?
