I have been researching for some time. It is a very tedious affair as a lot of official documents that became unclassified after BHOD was decomissioned in 1998 are available, but under some rather odd titles. It is very interesting and if nothing else comes of this, I know for sure I will at least visit this area. It's significance in our countries military history is astounding mostly because it has been kept so quiet. The uranium mining is a known factor to us. An understanding of how it is processed and when it is the most volatile is known to us, so the fear factor is not an issue. However, known levels of contamination are sketchy at best. Winters will be a challenge for the first year, but our blood will thicken and we adapt and overcome quite well. It would be a similar issue for northerners in a typical 110degree, 100 percent humidity day in mid summer. Add to that a power outage and no A/C and the challenge is on!!

WEll, if the cold doesn't bother you and you've already checked out the contamination factor, I'd say to come on up. West River has very little humidity so you wouldn't have to deal with that. But they can have above 100 degree days. In fact it was a West River town, I believe, that tied the record SD high last summer and that's 122. Now that's toasty.

On the flip side, East River does have humidity, but not like Florida has. I love the feeling of the heat and humidity of Fla. Our temps can also get well over 100, but the difference is we may have a few summer days over 100 and not 4 months of extreme heat.

Wink Provo/Edgemont

I just joined this forum, and don't get on the internet very often. Noticed the thread about Provo; since I am in Minnesota [its not my fault], I want to move to SD ASAP. I spent a few days in Edgemont last Oct and May looking for the right property. Went to Provo and talked to one of the residents and looked around. Provo looks like a junk town, but the people are very nice. Some old homes, some shacks, some rundown mobiles.

Edgemont is a nice small town with a railroad switchyard that is very active. I would have purchased the bank, but the property is compromised. Homes run from very old to very new.

Ft Igloo is a tragedy. It was given/sold to the state of SD, which handed it over to Fall River county, which sold all or part of it. I drove into Ft Igloo in June and the church and other buildings were being torn down by unknown persons. It is all private and cannot be searched on foot.

That is all I know; cause I am still trapped in Mn, until some rich widow comes along to save me. I realize this is late. It is the best I can do.
