Provo/Edgemont Area
Can anyone give me any information on Provo? I realize it was actually a viable little town when Igloo was still in operation, but what about now? I can't even find a map to locate a piece of property on or what street is what there. I have found the people of SD to be so nice and I hope someone can help me out.

Hi Surfer and welcome to the forum. Guess the West River people will know where Provo is. I do know that Edgemont is still there and several years ago they had done a lot of uranium mining there. It had been brought up again about restarting that, but I don't think it was ever approved.

Provo, SD
Thanks for the welcome. Provo is south-southwest of Edgemont. I know people live there, at least a good handful do, and I am sure there are no real businesses there. I may have some property there, but finding a map or any information has been frustrating. I am going to move to SD soon and am interested in anything that anyone can tell me about this ghost town. I love your forum and look forward to continuing conversations with the good people in my future home state.

I am not sure if I have ever been to Provo proper, but I have passed it may a time on my way to Denver. I am pretty sure it has been generally abandoned and it is mostly grassland out in that neck of the woods.

Not much left in Provo. While it is not abandoned it is pretty close to it. Edgemont is not to far away, about 15 miles. For as many times as I have gone through Provo I really don't know a lot about it.

Provo/Edgemont
Thanks for the replies. I heard Provo was pretty much empty. I have lived in a tourist area in Florida for the past 25 years and an area with a severe lack of civilization is quite appealing. My biggest worry is the remoteness during the winter months. I am considering buying property in Edgemont and forgetting the Provo property for now. I need to get away from the over-crowding, high cost of living and the summer heat, not to mention the hurricanes. I lived in New Hampshire, so I know cold and snowy seasons. Right now we are paying 3.25 a gallon for gas and milk costs almost 5.00 a gallon. The taxes and insurances in this area have more than doubled and every street has at least (2) homes on the market. So, I don't forsee this getting any better. I appreciate your replies and hope you all have a great weekend!!

According to a demographic website I frequent, the population of Provo is 41 people with 20 households. Today the temperature is 7 degrees with light snow.

If I lived out in the Prove-Edgemont area, I would have a 4 wheel drive truck or SUV to get around in addition to a car, espcially if it is away from US 18, in town, or a well-travelled road.
If you are big into nature and wildlife, this area may suit you. It is wide open and there is a lot of elbow room. You would not be too far from Edgement and Hot Springs for the basics and Rapid is a little further for more items. Hot Springs has a nice grocery store and a Pamida (a small town discount store chain)

Thankyou
I appreciate the input. I am definitely looking to get away from civilization (or the lack there of) and the crazy life of a tourist area. Thanks for your input and time. By the way...it has been in the 30s during the day here in Florida and we touched the teens on Sunday night. I know its not like your winters, but for us thin-blooded southerners it's quite a shock.

Will you be needing employment if you move there? I think the Edgemont area is fairly desolate. Have you checked into the after affects of the uranium mining that has been done in that area? I honestly don't know anything about it, but I think it'd be wise to check in to.
If you decide on checking out the area and the property, you may want to do it in the wintertime. You'll definitely love summers here, but you'll also need to find out if you can endure the winters. They're not really that nice unless you would like skiing or snowmobiling, etc.
