Lookin to Relocate...
I'm looking to relocate to the Lead/Deadwood area and start up a barbershop. My question is, does anyone think that a Barbershop would work well there in either Lead or Deadwood? I'm 33 yrs old so I'll be doing this for a while. I've look around and from what I have found is that there isn't a barber in either of the 2 towns. The closest shop is located in Sturgis 16 miles away. I would appreciate all input on this subject. Thanks.
Mike

If there is not a barbershop in Deadwood/Lead then I am sure your business will make major profit. It is hard to believe that there is no barbershop up there though.

Nope, I've checked. No Barber shop. I've drove around both towns and can't find any or any listed in the phone book. There are quite a few "stylists" thought, but I don't think those ladies I would have to worry about. Thanks for the reply.

It would not be a bad idea. It can be promoted to the toursits. The hotels usually have directories for local businesses; it would not hurt to have the barbershop advertised so that the visitors are aware and give you business. It will be convenience for the locals also, if it is reasonably-priced. You may be able to make a decent profit in the summertime when there are a ton of toursits that come to visit the area.

MH, welcome to the forum. You know, it's not a bad idea. If you're sure there are not other barbershops there, you may do very well especially when the science lab gets going and many people move in to the area.
Does anyone have any idea how long it will be until they get things started on that?

Thanks Jammie, Chris, and Danny for your feedback. As for being another barber in town, I've asked around and haven't found anyone that knows of one. I was just wondering which town would be a better location, Deadwood or Lead? Lead has the larger population, but Deadwood gets more traffic, but thats on the strip. Is there as much traffic off the strip in the rest of the town also in Deadwood?

Mhurd,
Lead does have a barbershop, however Deadwood does not.
Randy's Barber Shop
403 Glendale Dr
Lead, SD 57754

One barber shop covering Lead, Deadwood and the surrounding immediate area does
not sound like enough. Good Luck.

Hey Mike,
I think you'll do fine. Even in a tough economy people have to take care of the neccessities. People still have to eat and still have to get hair cuts. Try to make sure you can find the best location for the money so you are visible to traffic. Decorate the shop as best you can afford so it looks nice and it will work. I wish you all the best!

Randy's Barber shop is closed. I has been for 2 years now. I went to Barber College with Randy. Him and I are good friends. He lived in Hermosa and worked in Lead and it got to be to much and then his wife had some health problems so he just closed down. But thanks Bob for your input. I agree that they need one and with a population of about 5000 between the 2 towns it should do well.
My question is, with all the Beauticians in the 2 towns, would guys rather go to a barber? I know I would. I was born in Vermont and miss the mountains, trees and snow. But I want to be sure I can make a living out there. Starting from scratch is tough as y'all could guess. I have a shop in Aberdeen, but can't stand the flat land to live the rest of my life.

I'm sure you would get business even if you set up shop off of the Deadwood Strip. Businesses are likely to refer people to you. Try some advertising too.
