Wal Mart postponed plans for a third Sioux Falls store and I am not sure about Rapid City. Wal-Mart has cut down the number of store openings nationwide. I would like to see a second one in Rapid to relieve the pressure off their current one. I was not really impressed with the one there when I was inside it in 2003.
It would be nice for Sioux Falls to have a third one. The two are busy and the one on the west side is horribly busy during weekends and the line going into the parking lot from Louise backs up traffic and makes traffic even more horrid on 41st and Louise.
Hy-Vee has three newer stores and two built in the early 1990s. The two older ones will be expanded and remodeled to resemble the newer stores and there is possibility of more being added in the future. I would like to see one or more go up in the following areas: far west side, northwest side, far south side, or in Harrisburg (north side of it towards Sioux Falls).

Chris, are Hy-Vees and Sunshine Foods the only major markets in Sioux Falls? Do you guys have Kroger's or Baker's or any others?

No, just Hy-Vee and Sunshine, other than Wal-Mart. There used to be Econofoods (same parent company as Family Thrift/Nash Finch), but they flopped when Wal-Mart came in with their groceries. No Krogers or Bakers (just in Omaha/CB market). Super Target on the east side may be a new choice in 2009.
Des Moines is the same way as Sioux Falls. Des Moines is dominated by Hy-Vee and Dahl's with the Wal-Marts and Targets for groceries. Target is more dominant there than Wal-Mart. Kansas City is similar with Price Chopper, Hy-Vee, and the super Targets and Wal-Marts.
Omaha has Baker's, Bag N Save, No Frills, Hy-Vee, Super Target, and Wal-Mart SuperCenter and it is a varied grocery store market relative to other areas.
Minneapolis has a diversity of stores but Rainbow Foods, Cub, and Target seem to be the bigger ones up there. Sioux City is dominated by Wal-Mart, Hy-Vee, and Fairway.
Albertsons have cut back on their stores in Colorado Springs and the ones my grandparents shop at closed and they have to drive three or four miles further to shop at the newer one (they are loyal to Alberstons).

It's too bad that Albertson's is closing down and selling so many stores. They've been in the Black Hills market for decades.
When I was in Minneapolis I enjoyed going into Kowalski's Market. In Denver, I like to go to Whole Foods and Wild Oats Market. I doubt we'd ever get anything like those here though. They're a little too classy and they carry some stuff that would be unfamiliar to South Dakota.
