How many seasons does it take for your blood to thicken, so you can accommodate the cold weather easier? This is coming from someone who lives in North Florida who plans to be in South Dakota one of these days.

It would take a bit of time. You learn to dress in layer and dress warmly. I am a poor example though. It can be 30 degrees and I am outside in a T-shirt and comfortable as long as wind is calm and I am moving.

I would suggest trying to be here, in the fall. One thing about cold weather. You can always add another layer. In warm climates, there's only so much clothing a person can take off!

Getting through your first winter in SD will be a major accomplishment and give you an idea of what to expect (expect there will be surprises down the road also). Cabin fever can be as bad for some as the cold/snow are for others, and I swear that there are some natives that never truly get used to the cold. Also, you'll need to know that at -30F you still have to go to work!

Layers layers and more layers. Some winters are worse than others.

I also depend upon flannel sheets about 4 + months in the year (and I'm in SE MN, hoping to move to SD). I'm finding this winter harder than others but it could be b/c I'm overly stressed over losing my job. But this crappy winter we are having is keeping me from wanting to try to find a job in ND - I just don't want to live anyplace colder right now!

I'm sure it will take a few years to get used to the winters. But the summers aren't as hot and humid - and no hurricanes
