Naomi Ruth is on a distinguished road
I attended a 2 room school house, and yes, it was quite the experience. When it snowed there was a great hill behind the school house that we'd sled down.
Sometimes we'd get to school and there'd be cows in the school yard.
I remember one warm fall day the back door was open to let in a breeze. I was doing my school work and I looked up to see a large bull snake tentitively making it's way into the class room near the teachers desk.
A moment later the teacher saw it too. Boy, you should've seen her jump!
Of course the next hour required the support of everyone in the entire school to get the snake, and to safely release it back into the wild.
I've got other stories too, but that'll have to wait until my book comes out. No, Just Joking.

Jammie,

In the late 60's the state tried to get rid of our rural school districts. They were allowed to operate if they were attached to a larger town district for purpose of administration.

I spent twenty some years teaching in one and two room schools, all of them in South Dakota, and since 1983.

I happen to know that there are still some near Winner, and Meade County has quite a few.

I taught in Perkins County in the early 80's and I assume they still have at least one.

Perhaps someone currently living in western SD could better fill us in on the schools in their area.

In fact, Jammie, there are two two room schools operating in the Mitchell district that are technically public schools.

MK, that's a cool pic. Those little schools were so tiny and cute. It just makes you wonder how so many of us from the Boomer generation were ever educated since we were quite a larger generation.

Just want to add that as far as I know, there are no country schools East River. The schools that are referred to above are Hutterite Colony schools. They are technically part of larger districts, but the only children who attend are from the colony.

I don't want to give anyone the perception that they could move here and if they chose a certain area, their children could still go to a one room school.

A one room school..........with computers?
I wouldn't call that country.

South Dakota and North Dakota have Online Museums for "One Room Country Schools.
I'll try and find the link.

"The Milan Township District #83 Schoolhouse"

Does anyone remember the "BookMobile"?

Or permission slip your parents had to sign?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Parent Permission Slip
The Milan Township District #83 Schoolhouse

The ____-grade class of ______________________ is planning a field trip to the Blackwell History of Education Museum’s Milan Township District #83 Schoolhouse in DeKalb, IL. While the students are there, they will learn about school life of children in the 1900s or 1930s.

A comprehensive educational program has been planned for the students. We at the Blackwell History of Education Museum believe that the children will enjoy their day and learn a lot about one-room schoolhouses. Included with this letter are suggestions for a costume for your child’s visit to the schoolhouse.

The Blackwell History of Education Museum is forming a scrapbook of all the visitors to the Milan Township District #83 Schoolhouse. With your permission, the Blackwell will take pictures of the students throughout their day at the Schoolhouse and a class picture at the end of the day. Once these pictures are processed, the Blackwell will post them to an online scrapbook and place them in a scrapbook in the Museum. A few may also be used for publicity.

Please sign and return the permission slip at the bottom of this page. Thank you for your support.

"Pen and Ink Permission"

During their visit to the Milan Township District #83 Schoolhouse, students will have the opportunity to use pens and inkwells.
This activity is used to help students understand the challenges of penmanship in the 1900s.
Your child’s teacher will only allow this activity with permission from parents.

There is a risk that your child will spill ink on him/herself and ruin his/her outfit. The Museum would like you to be aware of this risk.
If you are uncomfortable with this risk, circle the will not allow part of the slip.
