I need to find that again.
Yes, when you find it, share it with us.

I remember driving past a drive in theater in both Sioux Falls and Yankton when I was a small boy and seeing the picture on the screen. I wished we could see a picture but we belonged to a church that frowned on movies.

I was forty some years old before I got to see a movie at the Starlite in Mitchell. I'm glad it's still going so we could go. It was hard to find a night with films that were fit for the kids to see. It was plenty chilly the evening we were there(I think it was the last week of April) so the lawn chairs didn't work out and we all had to stay in the minivan, but everyone had a good time.

I remember Tyndall had one, and Winner had two, one on the east side of town and one on the west.

I spent 1st grade in a one room school (berens school) just out side of Lennox S.D.The funny thing was my last name is Behrens which is pronounced the same as the schools name, so when we 1st started there the kids did'nt believe that was our name. My 3 older brothers also attended. I have very many fond memories of my time there. There were 3 kids in my grade. I would'nt trade those times for anything.

The last movie I watch in a Drive-in as a kid was either "Black Beauty" or "Zorro".

Was there a year when most of them( schools ) closed?

In Minnesota, that year was 1969 when the last one in our area closed.

Many of ours were converted into township halls where meetings and elections are held.

The one that I went to in Mi. (Selma 5, in Selma Township) I believe I was in 4th grade in 1962 when it closed. About a year later a family moved in.

I am from the Madison area. I grew up on a farm west and south of Junius. I went to a country school which was called Orland. There was a little store across the street from it that we called the Orland store. I finally went to school in town in the 6th grade. It was about the 1967 time frame. They turned the school into a sewing factory called Dakota Industries. My brother and me both worked there because at that time there was no such thing as "Child Labor". I am told that they have torn the school down and all that is left is a marker that says Orland Consolidated School. I had a yearbook that my parents bought when I was in the 3rd grade however one of my siblings has it and no real hope of getting it back. I so would like to know some of the history behind that beloved school however I have spent countless hours on the web trying any combination of terms and still am unable to find anything. It had K-12. Our 5th grade class had only 6 kids in the entire class. There were always 2 classes in the same room. They weren't very big. I have even searched some of the college sites to see if there was anything there but still nothing. I would appreciate it if anyone can help me with this. I have moved from SD 35 yrs ago but come home occasionally. I guess the older ya get the more you wish you would have asked.. Thanks
