Southern California is losing people with a population decrease of about 5 %. per year. With high rents and home buying, high crime, Gangs, too much traffic with waiting in traffic 1 to 2 hours, high cost of living, drugs in schools, the California Legislature trying to promote a Gay lifestyle and as you say, the children need space which is lacking; The Dakotas is the place to go. If I were raising a family, I would seek asylum at any place but California.

Do Southern California residents seeking to relocate ever consider moving to areas or towns in Northern California? I've noticed that lots of people leaving So Calif usually go to another state.

Jammie and chewy12:

For most reservations you must be at least 1/4 Indian and an enrolled member of the tribe. There may be exceptions to the 1/4 rule for some reservations, but very few that I know of. Also, you must reside on your reservation to receive any assistance.

Ok so I'm guessing the rules must've changed from the 60s when it was considered one eighth. Guess I'm behind in time. You can receive some assistance even if you don't reside on your reservation as long as you're an enrolled member of a tribe. I have a friend who is one half Sioux and he has a child with a white gal. Both he and the child are members of a tribe and receive free medical care and free dental care if they go to their reservation to get the care. So I was thinking that his daughter would be one-eighth Sioux. Wouldn't that be right?

Jammie -

If your friend is one-half than his child would be one-fourth Indian blood, and therefore if enrolled the child is eligible for tribal benefits. (1/2 of 1/2 is 1/4) Yes, medical care is available back on the reservation through the Indian Health Service clinics.

I am not to sure what you are all talking about that being 1/8th Indian (in any tribe) qualifies a person to receive a check from the government. No receives a check from the government. I know I grew up there, am enrolled in the tribe and as a matter of fact never received cash benefits from the tribe or the government. Yes it is poor there and unemployment is high. There are few businesses. Building are old. Some receive money from trust land but not everyone owns land. Geez do people really believe this in this day and age? We are penalized when we choose to leave so we can take care of our families. The system is designed to keep it that way. We get revenues from nothing. The casino barely makes enough to keep running and that monies is divided amongst the districts for community use. NO ONE in the Oglala Tribe receives monthly checks from casino revenues. NO ONE receives checks for just being Native American. There are some benefits we receive but not alot like health care (yes I do make copayments if I use an IHS somewhere other than SD). I really wish people would check their misinformation before making a statement!

AND I wish that those of you who have received free healthcare, dental care, optometrics throughout their lives would realize just how much they are given. Let's not twist this now~If you go to the reservation you are enrolled in, all these things are free. You don't have to live there in order to receive it. You can drive there from another county and receive the same benies as if you live there. This has been going on for generations and I wonder how many could actually quote a premium on health insurance because they're unaware of the costs. As far as paying a co-pay, we all have them and the only way that you have them is if you're receiving treatment off the reservation. Welcome to America.

It seems that there's been such a free ride for so many generations that you don't even realize how much you're receiving. AND we are NOT going to relive all of our wars and since you dug this old thread up, you have probably read that in other threads that were closed. You have ONE post in this forum and guess what it's about......

Moderator cut: I've had enough of the constant Indian/White man wars and will not tolerate the constant twistings of the truth and accusations. Someone always had to dredge up an old thread and restart it all even if it's not even on the same topic. If someone is interested in war~there's one raging right now. Enlist. This topic has always caused discord and hard feelings for all of us in the past and the subject is no longer open for discussion.
