Default new webcams in SD along highways

FYI for those who travel in the state....there are new web cameras installed by the SD DOT along I-29 and I-90 and some major highways in the state to let you see in real time how the weather/roads are up close.

South Dakota - Cameras

I came upon these while looking for webcams in northeast SD bordering ND.

Jammie...there is even one in Mitchell along I-90....

OMG, isn't that unreal? At first when they started having cameras around, it made me uneasy. Now I've grown so accustomed to it, that it's kind of cool.

Hey Jammie,

I agree, it seems like we're being watched. But, these appear to be just for planning trips around weather conditions. As long as they don't start pairing them with radar guns and mailing out speeding tickets to everyone, I think they are great because it gives me a chance to see SD from here.

I clicked on all of them, I figured there'd be more snow.

One thing to remember, Jammie, is that the concept of intelligent transportation systems is traffic patterns and volume. It has nothing to do with surveillance. All it is is traffic counts and letting the public know where the problem spots are and what highways to avoid should anything happen such as accidents. So, with these cameras on the internet, you'll "know before you go". That's what people across the country must understand. It's revolutionary, and this will save people headaches and time.

The camaras are there for informational purposes and see that a number of other states such as Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska, New York, and Utah have them. I find them helpful for road conditions. They were indeed helpful in the past couple of months when I had to drive into Sioux Falls with ones right south of the city along I-29.

When the website first opened, I recall that it lacked camaras in North Sioux City but soon included them. Other logical areas to add would be in Huron, Pierre, Aberdeen, Yankton (along the Missouri River Bridge), Vermillion exit (1-29), Summit exit (I-29), and also within urban areas of Rapid City and Sioux Falls along the interstates and key routes.

Regarding them being survielance, I have no worries. I would be worried if I was drive 1 or 2 mph over the speed limit and the ticket being mailed to my address or if it zoomed in on my car and see me give a cheesy grin.

It would be neat to see what is going on in Caputa. Not too familiar with it except that it is a very small town east of Rapid City.

Yea, these cameras seem relatively safe from prying eyes. But there are other sites posted on here that people are very visible. I believe it was Debbey who had posted some and one of them is right in front of the Corn Palace.

Oh gawl! Caputa would probably need 15 cameras and robotic crossing guards for all their traffic!
