Default Precipitation

This map should give those who are not from South Dakota an idea of where rainfall occurs most. It's a pretty popular topic around here!

Wow. What disparities! So, Danny, what's with that little 'spot' in the Western part getting so much rain? Any ideas?

That would be the Black Hills. And a lot of that precip falls as white stuff.

Those are some of the highest reaches of the Black Hills. They can get tons and tons of snow and rain while Rapid City is barren. Deadwood got 19 inches of snow last week and Sturgis didn't see anything. They're 8 miles apart.

It might be old, but it still holds true. We have a cabin across the road from Florence (2 miles West of Rochford) and it gets a lot of moisture. Both rain in the summer and lots of snow in the winter.
