Oh no!!! I'm guessing you've already checked out Ellsworth and the airport?

Thanks! (Jammie too). It was just a thought really. It might be a real possibility, but we'll wait and see what happens. We'll be out for a week soon and hope to look around for potential opportunities.

Yes I have applied for jobs at Ellsworth, waiting to hear something. As far as the airport, no openings that I could find.

I'm going to check this out. I've been applying all over the US, but Rapid City is where I want to be!

It's dry, hot and windy in the summer, and dry, cold & windy in the "winter". The Black Hills are nice when they're not on fire, and real estate in the hills is waaaaayyyyy overpriced. People want top dollar for every tree on their property.
I've had the unpleasant experience of living there for the past three years....can't wait to leave.

Real Estate has been waaaaaaaaayyyy overpriced just about everywhere for the past 20 years. It's all relative. If the average small, newer home is $225,000 and up, there is no way an average working person can go just about anywhere in the country and actually afford the monthly payment with interest and taxes. I want to move to Rapid and have for years but I plan to rent either an apartment or a home for probably a long while. Actually, I'm not certain I'll every "buy" another home. Realistically, you don't buy it anyway, you just borrow more money from the bank than you are able to pay back and the bank owns your home.

BHDreams, you're on the right track there. Actually rent and real estate may even seem fairly reasonable to you considering the high cost of living down there. The weather in our state really isn't ideal by any means, but the Hills area is generally quite pleasant.
Just curious, Moose, where will you be moving to for a better cost of living?

Exactly! Gas, food, and other necessities cost just about the same everywhere. Housing is crazy just about everywhere, so rent. The only places where housing is considered cheap are places that are destitude and have no employment opportunites to support mortgages.
Now you'll say "Rapid doesn't have any good paying jobs that justify the housing prices!". That's probably true for the most part, but Rapid's prices will be based on the scenery and the fact that it is a tourist destination, so people that made money move there and pay cash for property or have successful businesses elsewhere.
What can you do? You do the best you can. We are all here temporarily anyway. My father passed away pennyless last year, my brother and I funded the final arrangements. I bet he would have liked to have left something for us, but in the end, it doesn't matter. The moral of that story, make the best of your situation and don't stress too much over anything.

Is there another place cheaper to live with the same quality of life as there is here? I found this website helpful in comparing cities in costs of living. Houston is pretty much the only city that is cheaper to live in than Rapid City -by 1.6%. Most everywhere else is at least 25% more expensive. San Francisco, our nation's most expensive city, is 100.6% more expensive than Rapid City.

Just wait a few more years for the housing bubble to deflate. Pretty soon you'll be able to buy 3 foreclosed mansions for 100k.
