It would make sense to have limited development on the shores and in floodplains (near rivers and low spots) to limit potential losses and to have responsible development of housing and businesses. Many of the low spots and shore areas would be good park areas or left for agricultural and wildlife purposes.

I agree, especially in Louisiana and Florida, were you hear about all the wetlands and the Everglade being destroyed for developments, those act as natural buffers against hurricanes, especially in Louisiana's case even with all the advances in hurricane building protection (i.e. stricter building codes, etc...) Its getting tiring to hear of all the money being spent to rebuild the damaged places over and over again, especially in New Orleans where they are rebuilding to about the same as it was before Katrina.....what happens when another Category 4 hits New Orleans, another $70 billion of damage?

Is there a way these last few messages can be spun off into a new thread? They seem a bit off topic

It's ok. Since we don't have a regular "chat thread" like some states have, wandering a bit off topic is fine. As long as no rules are broken and newcomers get their questions answered, there's no harm done.

Our state just has too few members for a chat thread IMHO so we should be ok.

Well, even though we haven't been specifically talking about jobs in the Hills and Rapid, we are talking about costs of living which is related. For the most part, the inquiry's about jobs and so forth is to provide a basis for comparison to similar costs in other areas for those looking/hoping to relocate there. In a way, it's all relevant, but I agree, we wandered off a bit.

Hello, our family is also looking for work (pretty much anywhere at this point!), and have been investigating the Rapid City area. Does anyone know how the construction industry (carpenter/remodeler jobs) is doing there?? Also, are there any "4" bedroom apartments at all? I only found one, and not sure about it. Any help is so appreciated.

OH, also - to blackhillsdreams - We've been recommended to the Palm Coast area of Florida, too, and have tons of questions about that area, but have also read a lot of negatives concerning construction jobs (except that we were told Palm Coast is growing - ?)... Would you recommend the Palm Coast area to someone looking for construction work with a family (5 of us)-? Thank you tremendously, (and I'm so sorry if I'm helping veer off an original topic... would be glad to post wherever I can find help - we're getting desperate).

There is a lot of building going on in and around Rapid City so contractors and builders are working like crazy. Also, you probably won't find any apartments that have 4 bedrooms. You may have to rent out a house or a condo.

GBA Contractors -605.342.7006
J. Scull Contractors -605.342.2379
Avalon Construction -605.718.8697

These are just a few, there are dozens of others too.

Hi, I sent you a long PM with Palm Coast info. Let me know if you have any questions. I'd be happy to give you any advice I can. The short answer is, you can buy VERY nice homes in Palm Coast SUPER CHEAP right now but work is tough to find.

You're welcome! I don't think you'll find any nicer people on any forum anywhere but right here on the SD site. I'm proud to have joined the group. If you want to see some nice pictures of the Black Hills, I've posted some nice threads a couple months back with some good stuff from my trip out. Good luck in your search.
