Thanks Danny. I'll check it out. If I actually find something, I'll let you know for sure.

Default TESOL Jobs

Hi, my fiance and I are relocating to Rapid City this spring for his work in the Forest Service. My degrees are in Spanish/English with a certificate in ESL. I was wondering if there is a large group of people with English as their second language. Are there any ESL (teaching English as a Second or Foreign language) jobs? I have googled and really looked on line but cannot find any private language schools and cant' really see whether or not ESL is taught in the public schools. I did see maybe some opportunities to teach ESL on some of the Native American reservations but would love more information. Any advice/information on this would be incredibly helpful. Thanks so much in advance for your time!! I'm just looking for a way to use my degrees, be creative, and do something I love. Jewels

I have heard that the Saint Thomas More High School is looking for another Spanish teacher. Would you be interested in that? Otherwise, there are only a handful of Spanish-speaking families in Rapid City that I know of.

I would be interested in a Spanish job but am more familiar with ESL. My Spanish is a bit rusty. I will look into this school and thanks so much for your time.

You know, it's kind of funny. When I grew up in Rapid City it was required to take a foreign language in 5 and 6 grade. Had to take either spanish or french. It was required. I took french.

Now, I speak Tongalic, Mandarin Chinese, Spanish, Bali, fluently. Only because, in 6th grade they taught me not to be afraid of different languages. I guess I speak about 8 different languages. They come in handy. hahaha My biggest challenge has been writing in Chinese. I can write in spanish, no problem. But when it comes to Chinese, it's a challenge.

Can't speak a lick of French. Sorry Mrs Cutter.

My wife is from Colombia and is fluent in Spanish and English and has a degree in business administration. I wonder if she would be a good candidate for a Spanish teacher at a school? I know she could do it but I wonder if they would find her to be qualified without a teaching degree?

You could check, but generally they are quite picky about having a degree in education. I've noticed that they're even opting for teachers with less seniority if they had a major in a certain area over teachers with more seniority that have it for a minor. The only possibility is that the smaller school districts may be more lax.

Yes, smaller districts may be more willing to work with you. My brother had a degree in political science and spanish, and he was able to land a teaching job in Nebraska in a smaller school district. He had to get a temporary license or something like that and the school required him to take online classes to complete a teaching degree, but he really didn't have to take many classes and it only took him a year. So it is possible, at least here in Nebraska.
