Pheasant hunting in S.D.
I am interested in hunting pheasants next fall in S.D. and was hoping someone could direct me to the best area. I lived in Mellette until I was 14 and now live in Washington state. We left there in 1965 and I don't have contacts with anyone. I did hunt the area around Miller about 6 years ago and there were alot of birds, but I would like some advice as to where to go. I don't want to use a guide I just want to hunt private and public land.

Pheasant hunting
I grew up in Miller on a farm. Hunting pheasants was like chucking rocks. But my relatives all lived down around Tripp and Armour. Miller is an excellent area but the grains raised there are more for cattle feed. Wheat, Oats, Corn, etc. Around Tripp, Armour and that area, it's Millet, Flax and such. The pheasants seem to hang in that area a little more. When I used to go to my Uncles place South of Armour. When you left the house, you couldn't get to the barn without seeing half dozen pheasants. I'd either go where I was familiar, or I'd head down toward Tripp and Armour.

It has been said the NE SoDak is the pheasant hunting capitol of the world. All I can say is that there is usually good pheasant hunting in the Britton, Newark, Lake City and Veblen area, known as the "Glacial Lakes" area of SoDak.
And I can't help but leave with this bit of satire that always comes to mind whenever anyone mentions "pheasants." You will have to know your classic standard pop music well to know which song.
"Some find it pleasant dining on pheasant. The peas just roll off my knife. Sounds corny and seedy. But yes, indeedy. Give me the simple life.

The areas around Barnard, Houghton, Hecla, and in between Aberdeen and Britton have excellent pheasant hunting. We always have people in the CRP behind our house and they never complain for lack of birds.

I live in Sanborn County. So far, the pheasants have wintered remarkably well. Driving around, they are EVERYWHERE. A blizzard or ice storm or flooding spring rains can change that, however.

I live in West Virginia, and would like to hunt pheasants, but don"t know where to go. I would like to take my Grandson out without a guide.

We have hunting land in Huron, South Dakota. It is considered the "pheasant capital of the world", whether that's true or not I don't know. What I do know is that there are plenty of birds in that area. If I were you I'd stick to hunting anywhere East of the Missouri River.
I have also had good experience in Sanborn and Kingsburry counties, both close to Huron
Here is a site that gives you free hunting info in Huron.
