Default Tornadoes Near Hurley,SD

Hi there, I was wondering if any of you could ease my mind or just give me some realistic expectations. I live in Iowa and over the years have traveled Nebraska and south Dakota with some near misses with tornadoes. I am moving to South Dakota to be near family more family and it looks like a great place to raise children. I have four sons that just love nature and I always thought SD would be a cool place to live. I have been doing some internet searches on tornadoes in SD and actually saw a weather channel edition on SD last night that showed some large tornadoes..needless to say I am getting freaked out and know I have a phobia for these dang things. Maybe I should become a storm chaser to cure me of this..any advice or personal experiences with the weather would be awesome. I am going to travel back and forth to Sioux Falls daily and just want to be sure I don't get blown away

The weather channel was probably showing our "Tornado Tuesday". It was a few years ago and we had something like 64 or 69 tornadoes in one evening. We tied Texas for the record, but in a way we beat them. Record keeping is done in 24 hour increments and ours was in less then half that time.

But that was a first in recorded history for us. I've lived here 52 years and I've never personally seen a tornado. We've had a lot of watches and several warnings and there have been areas that have been hit not far from me, but , your chances of being killed in a tornado are actually very small. Our tornado season doesn't last half as long as it does in some areas of the country. Just come on up and join us.

Yes, Tornado Tuesday was bad... It was one of those nights I'll never forget.

I've stopped at the former site of Manchester twice since it was wiped off the map... It's just unreal to me.

I wouldn't let that stop you from moving here. Like Jammie said, your chances of being killed in a tornado are so small, and states to the south of us have much worse tornado seasons.
