Thinking of moving to SD.
Hi, My husband and I bought some property in SD. We bought it for investment about 2 years ago. Now we are thinking of moving up there and building a house. The property is about 60 miles north of Sturgis, off of hwy 85. What I was wondering is. Does anyone live in that area? How are the schools? Have 4 kids. How are the jobs there? How do you travel when it snows?(I know that sounds dumb, but I have never had to.) We live in south Texas near Houston. It just never snows here. If it does, it melts when it hits the ground. It is just getting too too hot in the summers! Thanks for any input you may give.

Texdeb,
I take it you will be either in Butte County or Harding County. Either way you will be real close to the middle of NO WHERE! Towns along Highway 85 north out of Belle Fourche to the North Dakota Line, are very very few to non existant. Highway 85 is miles and miles and miles of ranch grazing land. If you can give me a better location, I can maybe help you out further.

Hi, You are right.. It was part of a big ranch, Johnson Ranch. It is in Butte County approx. 30 miles from Belle Fourche. Nearer to a small town called Redig. It is zoned "agricultural". I've only seen pictures of the property. Looks like just praries. Thanks for the info.

Indeed. TexDeb, you will find lots of room to roam, something like the big sandy in extreme southern Texas. Except there's dirt in the area you have bought in SoDak. I'd suggest selling it soon to someone else and then moving the Newark, South Dakota. Start a grocery store there!

Newark??
Newark is a small 5 street town (if you count the short ones) that is located about 35 miles NorthEast of Aberdeen.
I haven't even been down in that area in 36 years or so, so if I'm wrong, somebody please point it out.

Hi Tex, I just checked the current weather for Aberdeen. It's 10 degrees and with windchill if feels like -1. It's only 8 pm so the temps will start dropping a bit more before morning. Our past two winters have been very nice and this one has been nice so far. But yes, we can get very cold temps. As far as blizzards~some years we barely have them and some years we have a lot of awful blizzards. That is the BIG negative for living here~we get some awful winters.

Jobs
I've read on these forums that there were not a lot of jobs in SD. Which job is most in demand. Teaching or a medical assisting?
Thanks!
