The problem Jammie is that they drained Pactola down to do some work on it. Little did they know, that was the first year of the drought. They've been years gaining it back.

I remember playing on the spillway as a kid. There was always water running over it.

Also, Mike announced that as of last night, 9.71 inches making it the most moisture in recorded history for May. The last record was 9.67 set in 1905.

That, is a lot of moisture. I would have thought that June of 1972 would have set a record, but it didn't.

EH do you mean the spillway at Canyon Lake? The spillway at Pactola is quite a long drop! I too used to slide down the spillway at Canyon Lake. Can't do it anymore because they are supposed to start doing repairs on it and they have it fenced off. We used to stand up and surf down it!

Jammie, the Black Hills are once again lush and green. I haven't seen them this way in years! They're beautiful! I'll be sure to take pictures tomorrow because we have friends in town. We're going to COSMOS!!!

Nope. The spillway at Pactola. Used to get out right along the road and wade back and forth at the top of the spillway on the East side of the road. No, we didn't get real close to the edge.

Water wasn't real fast or deep. Maybe 3 or 4 inches. But it was always running.

Keep in mind that last year and years before we have had plenty of rain in may and june, obviously not as much as this record setting year. The problem is July and August, it's like someone turns off the faucet and rain comes to a hault. This leads to a fire danger. Brush up in the hills that have been receiving plenty of spring rain becomes abundant and starts to dry out in the July and August months.

According to Tuesday's Rapid City Journal Pactola is at 64.3% capacity and Angostura is at 66.5% capactiy. Keep your fingers crossed for a rainy summer!

How's the water level on Lake Oahe these days? Thinking about a walleye run up there mid-July. Haven't been in a few years because of the draught and its impact on the fishery, but I hear its come back some?

I haven't heard much about Oahe's fishing but it should be good. When the water level goes down in lakes it creates the opportunity for plants to grow where it is normally underwater. The plants give good protection for fish eggs and result in higher numbers. Oahe has gotten back up to 67.9% capacity, which is a pretty good number compared to what it used to be at.
Happy fishin!

Yep, all fishies do love structure. Thats good news on Oahe, and thanks. A few years ago it looked pretty pathetic at less than 1/2. Looks like you're finally getting some moisture, too.
Can't wait to pull into Pierre and gear-up at my favorite everything store in the world - DAKOTAMART!!
