South Dakota's drought.
Have the recent rain falls brought the water levels back up yet to where they should be? How about Pactola? The news showed that both the South and the North launches can be used now, but are the levels back up to what they should be or are they still lacking?

Our local news was just talking about that yesterday. I don't know if the water levels in the Lakes out West are where they should be, but they did say that this has ended the drought that's been plaguing the Hills for several years now. Was it 7 or 8 years?

I have heard that most lakes are already 5 feet above where they were this time last year. That's great news because last summer was very dry and forest fires were a constant occurance. Behind my house there is a small meadow and it is usually bone dry but today it is filled with water and there were ducks on it this morning! 
Yesterday I went up to Hill City and Keystone and the Black Hills looked very green and the creeks were full. This is something I haven't seen in years! What a relief! It was actually kind of humid yesterday too so I think I'll be on guard for another problem... MOSQUITOES!!!  |

Danny, it's great to hear that the Hills are green again. They are so beautiful when you get rain out there. Our neighbors just got back from spending the weekend there and said it was just beautiful. They went hiking in Spearfish Canyon and were just in awe with how all the waterfalls are just gushing water. They did a few of the normal things~Bear Country, the 1880 train, etc. They were SO surprised to see how Nemo has been growing. I didn't realize they were building a lot of new houses there.

Yep, there are a lot of new houses out towards Nemo and South Canyon. One of the developments in that area is a "green" development where all the energy is solar and water is recycled. Most of the homes out there are very expensive.
Your friend is right, all the streams, brooks, and creeks are full and gushing with water. I drove to Spearfish today and whenever I drive over the Box Elder Creek it's bone dry. Today it was completely flooded and all the hills along the Interstate were green and lush. It kind of reminds me of the Cascade Ranges in the PacNW. I'll be sure to whip out the camera tomorrow and take some pics! |

I might have to wait another day to take some pictures. It's really foggy and drizzly today. But hey, at least it's even more moisture!

As long as it's soaking in and not just running off, you'll be in good shape for most of the summer.

Finally, tonight they announced how Pactola is setting right now.
Pactola has risen 11% since January due to all the snow run off and the rain they've been having.
However, Pactola is still only at 64% capacity. Has a long ways to go.
I heard that it is still so low that you can see the glow of the lantern that they left lit down in the old saloon. |

The Weather Channel said that the Black Hills has finally ended their drought. They had record rainfall for the month of May. It seems like it was 9.67 inches of rain last month. The Hills are supposed to be green and lush and beautiful just like they always were years ago.
