I have heard of it a few times on KELO and Argus Leader and think that it is a good idea. South Dakota needs to use some ingenuity to attract former residents along with those with enterprising spirit. It would be a good tool to recruit residents and the successes off that can be applied in other areas such as recruiting businesses, other people, and the like.

KELO has had their Sunday evening topic-related show after the 10 PM news relating to this area. It was very interesting. South Dakota has a booming economy and the goal is to recruit former South Dakotans along with out-of-staters to come to the state to fill positions that are opened. With the baby boomer generation retiring, there will be even more positions to be filled and will be a need for out-of-staters and a better retention of its younger people to fill the positions or it will have a shortage of workers, which may discourage companies from opening up in South Dakota and hiring people. South Dakota wants to remain viable and have a dependable labor force to keep its economy going strong.
The thing the state needs to emphasize in my opinion is the people and the quality of life that is common here that is hard to find in many other places of the country: low crime, parks and recreational opportunities, low cost of living, ease of getting around in town and on the highways, good education, and good healthcare. |
