Is North Spearfish a seperate entity from Spearfish? It looks like it is per city-data. I lived in Spearfish in the 80's and don't remember any distinction.

I've always wondered that too but I don't think it is. Spearfish is kind of a "long and mis-shapen" city because of the peaks around it. Maybe it's just a local reference to that northside of Spearfish. Spearfish runs mostly along I-90 and it has 5 exits going into it. That's pretty impressive considering Rapid City only has 5 exits as well and it's about 10 times the size of Spearfish.

Wikipedia describes North Spearfish as a census designated place in Lawrence County, and another demographic website lists a population of 2,294.

I have understood that there are parts of Spearfish that are near the city but are not in the proper city limits. North Spearfish may be one of those areas where there is a cluster of people near Spearfish proper but are in unincorporated areas. To me this is confusing and am used to everything being the city proper then there is country (more of the style in eastern SD, Iowa, Minnesota, and Nebraska).

Spearfish has a lot of folks living in the county, but the city limits have nearly surrounded those areas. My fathers property is in the county, and is separated from the city limits by the chain link fence next to his driveway. Upper Valley, the north end of Evans Lane, the folks living along Hwy 85, Hwy 14 and out on the old Belle Rd, etc. would be residents of North Spearfish. In a few more years I suspect the city will gobble those areas up too.
