Hello out there,
I am moving to Spearfish from Cheyenne, Wy and had a few questions. I will be a student at Black Hills State and wanted to know what the part-time job market looked like in Spearfish. I was hoping for a job at Walmart or something along those lines. Also, how about apartment rentals, how do they stack up as far as availability, cost and cleanliness. Now for the fun stuff. I love to race Motocross and was wondering what the scene for this sport is like up there and is there a track to race on nearby. Any information on Motocross, Snowmobiling and snowboarding would be great. Thanks to everyone in advance.

CJ, you may want to check out the Black Hills Pioneer newspaper. It may help you with finding an apartment. They're fairly expensive out in that area though. Also, the paper may help with finding a job. There shouldn't be any problem getting a job there in the summer with all the motels full and the restaurants busy, but I'm not sure what they offer for year-round work in Spearfish.

CJ there are 2 ski areas about 30 minutes drive form Spearfish. There are about 350 miles of groomed snowmobile trails in the Hills, that are open to the public from mid-Dec through mid-March. Like Jammie said, apartments in Spearfish are fairly expensive, average rent for a nicer place is around $500-$600 a month - plus utilities. As far as the job market goes - many of the casinos in Deadwood hire lots of full-time summer help. And some may keep those people on through the winter. Jobs in Spearfish vary, there is a Wal-Mart Supercenter in town and they always take apps. There is also a credit card calling center near Wal-Mart. Have heard they hire lots of college students; full-time in summer and part-time in school year. Not sure if the moto-cross track near Belle Fourche is still there or not. Good luck.

When I was looking at going to school there like 6 or 7 years ago, all Freshman and maybe Sophmores had to live in the dorms unless your parents lived within 50 miles I think. I'm not sure if that is still the case, and I don't know if thats what year you'll be but if it is it might be worth it to check into.
