Might take a job in Pierre
I am looking at taking a job in Pierre and wanted to know what i was getting myself into. I am 23, single male that likes the outdoors. Wasn't sure if there was much going on up there as far as growth and things to do (night life)?

We don't seem to have any members from the Pierre area. I don't know a lot about it, but have been there a few times. It looks like it's a hunter/fisherman's paradise and the River is nice, but it's not really progressive for being our state's capitol. It's ok though~clean, decent, low crime, low cost of living, the people are friendly, etc. I'm just not sure it's where I'd have wanted to live when I was young~or even now for that matter. Just personal preference though.
There's a "Search" button toward the top and to the right. If you put in "Pierre" there should be a bit of info that will come up for it.
And welcome to the forum.

Pierre probably isn't the ideal place for a young guy who enjoys nightlife. Sure, there are a few bars but it's mostly an agricultural town and just because it is the state capitol doesn't mean it's progressive by any means. It's major appeal is the Missouri River and the great pheasant hunting. That's about it.

I lived in Pierre in the 80's and found it a good place to live. Granted, i was married and had 2 young kids. Pierre had an outstanding community theatre that i was involved in. I guess if your at all interested in state politics it would be a good place to live also.

The theater is still active... I am active in that organization.
As far as other activites... Outdoors stuff is popular. The other favorite passtime seems to be drinking and going to bars.

Pierre is a good town if you like the outdoors and having to drive three hours to a decent-sized mall and shopping selection. The city has quite a few restaurants and the basics such as Wal-Mart Supercenter, K-Mart, JC Penney (a smaller one), a couple grocery stores, and a number of local stores. Zesto's is great for ice cream. Pierre has great park system for a city its size.
It may be tough to find a decent rental at times, and this is based from my experience several years ago. I was not looking for something fancy but wanted something halfway decent and affordable. I eventually found something but took quick action. When I left Pierre, my apartment unit was rented out within a week or so after moving out (which was nice for prorating the last month's rent).
For a 23 year-old, it may tougher than Sioux Falls, Vermillion, or other towns with a university or large employment base to find others in your age group, but not impossible.
The cost of living in Pierre, overall, is reasonable. Rent is relatively low compared to Sioux Falls and Rapid City. Groceries and gas may be a little higher and one may make a once or twice a month trip to Sioux Falls or Rapid City for additional shopping or amenities. The utilities are reasonable, especially for electric.
Pierre is often warmer than eastern SD and Minnesota per se and does not get as much snow, but it often get hotter in the summer. The humidity is a lower than Sioux Falls and Aberdeen, but not as low as Rapid City.
As for people, there are many friendly people, but there are a few clicky people.
