Rent in Hot Springs
I will be doing a temp job in Hot Springs and wondered what kind of furnished apartments or corporate housing, hotels, etc. are available? Is the whole area a "safe" place to live?

I doubt that there is much in the way of corporate housing or furnished apartments. Hot Springs has about 10,000 people and there are several apartment complexes to choose from. It is very beautiful around Hot Springs and there is no crime to speak of.

Mtngal, welcome to So. Dak. even if it's just temporary. The site above will give you a bit of info about Hot Springs. As far as crime, it's practically non-existent there.

Thanks for the 2 answers to my rent question. Now, one more question. Is there a hiking club in Hot Springs? I really want to meet people who can show me the best hiking areas in the vicinity. I am looking forward to making new friends in Hot Springs. I grew up in a very small town in KY and love the friendly atmosphere of small towns.

I'm not sure if there is an actual hiking club in Hot Springs but many people in the Black Hills region, myself included, enjoy hiking frequently. You can even hike in many places in January and February. I'd check out Granite Sports in Hill City. They sell hiking and rock climbing equipment. If you're in Rapid City look at Edge Sports, Scheel's All Sports, and Cabela's. They can point you in the right direction too.
Most hiking places are known by all the locals so I'm sure you'll come across someone that will let you in on where to go.

Stop in at Sneaky's Chicken on the main drag of town near the south end. The owners like to go hiking and rock picking. They can fill you in. They make some pretty good chicken also.

Thanks. I found a place to live, so now I can concentrate on packing and planning on 2-3 months of work, fun and meeting people. I'll bring my fishing "pole" since I have never caught a walleye before. And being from the South, I will definitely be trying out the fried chicken!

It's great that you are optimistic about your move. Expect the climate here to be similar to Denver's and the pace of life to be much slower. May I ask what brings you up this way?

Ahhhh, There probably is some walleye in Angustora reservoir a few miles south of Hot Springs, but the fish that most of the locals go after is the cut throat trout. They generally use fly rods. Downplaying the Walleye and being inquisitive about fly rod fishing might make it easier for the locals to relate to you. The best walleye fishing is on the reservoirs of the Missouri which is a couple hundred miles east of Hot Springs.

I tried flyfishing one time. Have caught trout on a regular rod at Red Feathers Lake in CO. Some day I need to take lessons for flyfishing. I will be in SD to work as a travel nurse and will stay until it is too cold or until I am not needed. Then, I will head to a warm place like AZ, where I went last winter. Does anyone teach flyfishing in Hot Springs?
