Default Dental industry jobs/ Apts...???

Hello all,

My Wife and I have narrowed our list of possible move locations and Sioux City is on it. My question to all you SoDaks is...

My wife has been running a dental office here in Tampa, FL. for the past 8 years (office manager). She would be looking for either a career in dental office management or at the very least a front office position for the mean time with a local dentist. Are there very many dentists in the area and how hard do you think it might be for her to find a good job? She never finished her degree but has the experience and a glowing letter of recommendation going for her from the dentist she is currently working for.

In addition, we are not looking to buy right away and will be looking to secure an apartment or rental home until we become more familiar with the local real estate market and the overall area in general. We've got three young boys so we'll be looking for at least a 2 bedroom, but preferably a three bedroom apt.. Can you guys recommend any I should check out?

I thank you all in advance, and look forward to hearing from you!

BIG THANKS!!!

Are you thinking of moving to Sioux Falls? A small part of Sioux City is in So. Dak., but the largest part is in Iowa. Actually, Sioux City is in three states.

If you can clarify, someone will hopefully be able to give you info.

Jammie and everyone else,

I am so very sorry, lol. I only had a short bit of time when I typed the above and I accidentally typed "Sioux City" when I actually meant Sioux Falls! My bad... haste makes waste, I guess.

My appologies...

My Wife and I are definitely considering a move to the great state of South Dakota! My question applies to Sioux Falls.

Thanks for the correction Jammie!

Oh that's ok. Just this morning I set up a poll and put "Sandra Pallin" in it. Of course, I meant "Sarah" and her last name only has one "L". Just like you, I was a bit rushed. I just wanted clarification as to which area you're interested in.

You could start out by reading the local newspaper. It's actually the largest in the state and has a wide circulation base. There are apartments and employment listed in the Classifieds.

Sioux Falls actually covers a wide area for services such as dental and medical care so there are a lot of offices there.

The above link could help your wife get started with networking.

I don't personally live in Sx. Falls, but a few of our members do so if you have any more questions, one of us will try to get the answers for you.

Have you ever been up here? What made you chose Sx. Falls? We've been down in your area and just love it there. (St. Pete area)

Thanks for the information Jammie!

My wife and I have been searching for the "perfect place" (that doesn't exist) for the past 2 or 3 years now. We decided to start looking due to the crime, constant influx of new people to the Tampa Bay area (over crowding), and the oppressive heat & humidity (the latter you NEVER get used to no matter how long you've been here).

We both are Floridians born and raised. We are just tired of life down here in general. The area has it's perks... beaches, pro sports, performing arts, great dinning etc., etc., but crime and gangs are on the rise. We have three little boys and we'd like to raise them in a safer, more child friendly region. The one problem we have is, we've never even experienced snow so it's probably a little naive of us to think we can hack it up there in SoDak with relative ease, but we are totally adventurous people who absolutely love the idea of a "White Christmas".

Anyway, Florida is FULL of tourists, horrible drivers, crowded roads that were never built to handle such a mass influx of people with more expected and on the way (there is no end to the constant growth in sight). The crime has also gotten exponentially worse due to the above reasons since I was a child 2 1/2- 3 decades ago. In short, we are totally burned out and we want better for our kids.

One of the questions I have for you is, are there any other places in SoDak that we should check out in addition to Sioux Falls that might be a fit for us?

Once again,
THANKS!!!

I think Sioux Falls is a good choice. Since I'm a bit familiar with your surroundings, I can tell you that you'll find the city to be very clean and nice and our economy is excellent in comparison to yours. Our cost of living is much lower then yours when you consider cost of housing, insurance, taxes, car insurance, licence plates, etc.

One of the benefits that you have is that you can turn your AC and heat off for months and we really don't have that option here. We're talking more like "weeks" here.

I don't like winter so personally, I prefer your weather. It has a bit to do with personal preference and a bit of health issues, too. You may find winter to be a bit of a shock, but many people actually enjoy it and your family may, too.
Unfortunately, it's not just a bit of beautiful snow on the ground. There can be a lot of snow and terrible winds and cold, but the benefits of Sx. Falls vs. Tampa may well outweigh that.

I also like your scenery~the palm trees, the beach, those beautiful flowering bushes, etc. But you will also find beautiful scenery here~just different. Maybe I prefer yours because it's rare that I've gotten to see it???

On the flip side, I feel MUCH safer here then I do in your area. We have always watched the news and read your newspapers when we're down there and it's kind of scary for those of us who aren't used to much crime.

You can use the link above and browse around a bit. The first link you may want to look at is at the top~"South Dakota". I believe it will take you to our largest cities. Just not sure if you'd be happy in one of our smaller towns at first. Culture shock!!!

This is just personal preference, too~but I would stay along Interstate 90. I guess I just fit in more in this area then I would in the northern part of the state. I don't mean this offensively~just ME personally.

Rapid City is another city you may want to look at. It's at the start of the Black Hills and it's an awesome area. They have basically NO humidity and their winters are milder then East River.

CivilLib,
Your wife shouldn't have a problem finding a dental/office job in SF. It's a rapidly growing city, and in the past few years, new dental offices have popped up. There are many "rooted" dental offices as well... As I'm writing this post, I'm thinking I need to schedule a dental appt soon!
As far as apartments, here is a link... It's a small publication that is put out throughout SF with a bunch of apartments.
Apartments and Other Rentals - Renters Guide Magazine - Property Listing
There are many newer apartments... My friend used to live in the Platinum Valley Apartments at 69th & Louise. Really nice, if you can afford it. There are also clusters of nice apartments along Marion Road.
If you have a price range, I can do some research for you, and recommend some others.

Wow, I would really appreciate that MJ1986. Since any apartment we rent will only be a temporary home (6 months- a year at most) we are looking to go as cheaply as we can without ending up in a crime-ridden spot (if such a place exists). But we figure to spend anywhere from $800-$1200/ month if we can. Obviously toward the lower end if possible!

Any recommendations you could pass my way would be GREATLY appreciated.

Once again, we have three young children so low crime is a HUGE plus considering where we're coming from.

BIG THANKS!!!

Thanks for all the great info Jammie! Three questions...

1.) We obviously expect that our 1st winter or two will be an ENORMOUS adjustment for us, but are we being naive to think we'll adapt just fine over time?

2.) How well are the roads maintained during the winter and how treacherous is the driving going to be for us?

3.) What is the significance of "staying along I-90"? What lies beyond it?

-Thanks
