What are the bad neighborhoods in Yankton SD?
The wife and I are more than likely going to be moving to Yankton in a month or two. I will fly out there on business for a day or two in October and will have a very short time to look around. I am looking for answers on where to look. When we talk to realtors they simply tell us that all of yankton is nice and all of the typical load of realtor BS.
Hopefully someone on here is familiar with yankton and can answer this question for us. Basically we are looking for a place in town with a little character or a place just outside of town with some extra space. We really don't like the cookie-cutter style new construction homes on small lots. It would be great to be able to open our windows at night and walk our dog without being armed.
Thanks for any answers everybody
Mike and Jackie

Mike, I probably won't be much help. I haven't been through Yankton in about 2 years. I can assure you that Yankton doesn't have any "bad areas". There may be some a run-down area, but there are not any areas that are ridden with crime. Most cities in SD are like this. I live in Sioux Falls, with a population of 150,000 and we really don't have any really bad areas.

I used to live in Vermillion several years ago (which is close to Yankton). I don't remember any "bad" areas as far as crime goes. Just like in any town, there is an area with older homes. But Yankton is so small there won't be an "area" with crime. We used to eat at a yummy chinese restaurant there all the time.

Ditto to what was said before. Yankton has no real crime to speak of. You can scroll down on the link above to get the crime stats. It's a nice town and they are right along the river. Nice beach.
Welcome to South Dakota!!! Where are you guys coming from?

Yankton has the small town feel, but has all the services you will need. As Jammie said, it is right on the Missouri River, and has great places for camping/boating/fishing.
Good Luck on your trip, Mike!

No real bad areas of town in Yankton. But that is kinda the norm for South Dakota towns and cities.

Yankton is by and large a clean and safe community of 14,000. The eastern part has a few run down areas but is still a safe area. Yankton does not have a major problem with crime. Crime does occur from time to time, but would be more petty stuff such as kids having too much of a good time (partying), domestic disputes, or a random event that does not happen very often. Yankton is one of my favorite cities in the Upper Midwest that is in the 10,000-25,000 people range and would be a city I would seriously consider if I stayed in South Dakota and relocated outside of the Sioux Falls area.
I have been to Yanton a number of times when passing through and when I lived in Vermillion (going there to eat out or for other things). A majority of the people in Yankton are friendly and good-natured. I know a few people from there that are also great people.
The city has plenty to offer for a city its size (hospital, shopping, eating, recreation in town and nearby Lewis and Clark Lake along the Missouri River, and is within an hour of Sioux City and Sioux Falls if one desires additional shopping and medical care.
The new bridge ribbon cutting ceremony is Oct. 11. The new bridge will be nice to use when I pass through Yankton when going to either Kansas/Oklahoma or to Colorado.
I would recommend Yankton as a place to live in.

Does anybody want to reconsider their answer??? A murder and a triple murder within a few blocks would constitute a bad neighborhood in my book.

That was just horrifying and we just heard it on the news a few hours ago. Actually, I will still stick with my reply. It was a very isolated incident. I'm not sure what you're referring to be "a murder and a triple murder". What was the one about?
The last horrifying thing that came out of Yankton happened about 20 years ago or more. It was something nearly as awful as this.
