Default Custer Area

I would love to purchase a second home in the Custer area. My main concern is the ability to get around in winter. Should I plan a Christmas trip to look around or would I be snow bound? Also, I'm concerned about the airport in Rapid, how is air travel in winter? I can wait until spring, but I would really like to visit my granddaughter for Christmas and investigate homes at the same time.

Well, barring an outright blizzard, you should be able to get around fairly well. Just drive carefully and be cautious of how you brake so you don't go into a skid. They generally keep our roads driveable throughout the winter. In fact, the interstates are rarely closed.

As far as the airport, it's operational most days of the year.

Its rare for the airport to close. Southern Hills (Custer area)fares pretty well when it comes to snow and most roads are open and maintained year around.

I 90 sometimes is shut down but its never for an extended period of time.

You may just luck out and there might not be any snow on the ground during your visit. Just because it is winter up here does not mean that there will be a constant sheet of snow on the ground. Usually when it snows up here it melts very quickly.

I think I have seen more Christmas Holidays where we were outside in light jackets and no snow.

Hey Dixie,

There is a web cam that is right on main street in Custer that is up 24/7 for the most part in near real time. I can't remember the link but you can find it easily with a web search. I checked it a lot last year with the same thing in mind, the road looked great almost all the time so no worries.

Good luck!

Perhaps, but that's still few and far between for South Dakota.
