The fire has now grown to 50,000 acres and is still burning brightly. Winds are strong and out of the northwest. Snow is predicted for tomorrow. The Park is asking for Hay donations to feed the Buffalo and Elk this winter. The only thing that could make it worse would be if FEMA were involved.
The air quality has cleared up in Rapid over nite.
It was terrible for those with respiratory problems
like myself. Finally got to go outside for a while today.
Good to know, and glad that you all are safe and well. Have seen some pics and it looks awful. Hopefully this fire season will yield beautiful green grasses and forbs in the Spring.
We drove around the perimater of Custer Park yesterday by following the state hwys. We didn't see any burros, but the report was that 2 or 3 got singed. They are expected to recover. Because the cold weather kept the heat of the fire down, there seemed to be less damage to the large trees than I would have expected. A few areas were devastated, but the grass will green up quickly in the spring and the trees will shed their brown needles. Tourism should be largely unaffected. Feeding the Buffalo, Elk, Deer, & Antelope & Burros this winter will be a challenge.
For anyone interested: Donations specifically for ranchers/farmers affected by the Legion Lake fire are being taken by Farm Rescue, which is a well respected 501c3 charitable organization. I have donated to them for many years. Here's their website: Farming | Harvest | Planting | Assistance When you click on "Donate Now" and fill out the form you'll see a place where you can check that your donation is specifically for this fire disaster in South Dakota.
Another place to donate to specifically help Custer State Park and the animals affected by the fire there: The South Dakota Parks and Wildlife Foundation https://www.parkswildlifefoundation.org/donate.aspx
