AMAAAAAAAAAAZING community. Omg I dont know where to start. Right when you pull off the Interstate it all starts. Here is a checklist of events that occured while I was visiting my future new school.
-Brought some friends with and within minutes they siad, "I like this place, it looks cool"
-The restuarunts per capita are awesome. They have an Applebees when the town size really should not support it. And a local joint called the Z'Kota that is essentially a drive thru grille. I had to best Cajun Chicken sandwich ever and not even Watertown has a Cajun Chicken, booO!
-You will meet poeple wheather you like it or not. This town has such a positive attitude that I wondered where i have been all these years!
-You get this overall aura that your in some sort of paradise when your on 6th Street. Just the way the streets are clean and huge trees makes you feel all warm inside.
-Daktronics is located here and thats the plant that makes all the Jumbo-tron scoreboards in most of the professional sports staduims.
-Im ditching Watertown for this place this summer. Its a great social communty. People act like people.

what about the public school system in Brookings? Also, are there other towns/communities in close proximity to the university that you would recommend buying a home in?

Volga is a small town only about 5 miles from Brookings - lots of people buy there and work in Brookings - the schools are pretty good in Brookings - we thought about moving back to the area before we landed here (lived there for 5 years while at SDSU) There is a nice four lane highway from Volga to Brookings that makes the drive a piece of cake Super easy drive to SDSU.

how nice is it?
I'm hoping like heck to move to Brookings, SD. in the near future. What can I expect for my family, (wife + 3 school aged kids), and I?

Kish, what types of employment are you and your wife looking for? I don't live in Brookings so I don't have the answers for you, but if you tell us a bit about what you're hoping for, a couple members could help you out. AND welcome to the forum.

Jammie, I hate to count my chickens before they hatch. Perhaps I can reveal more in a week or so..., sorry.
I have read many positive postings about SD and Brookings in particular. It appears to be a great place to raise a family. A little wet these days though!
Thanks for the welcome.

Brookings is a city of 18,000 to 19,000 people and is growing steadily. I have been through there a number of times and stopped there on several different occasions and found it to be a nice city. It is within an hour of Sioux Falls, which would be handy if one wants additional conveniences. SDSU is the state's largest university and has a number of programs inlcuding nursing, engineering, agriculture, educatation, etc. Going to college at USD in Vermillion, I can't be too boastful of Brookings.

Yes, in fact the college is probably twice the population of the town! It's called SDSU, and it's a very solid establishment. I got my undergrad there in Mechanical Engineering. Engineering, Nursing, Pharmacy and Agriculture are their strongest colleges, but I'm probably forgetting a few.
Brookings has a lot of great qualities, but I'm unsure what you're looking for... The nightlife is definitely there, and almost all of it is on Main St. It's a young crowd due to the university.
There's a few golf courses there, and some great neighborhoods. In the 5 years I spent there, I never once went through a part of town I would think twice about walking through in the middle of the night. It's very safe. In fact, if I heard right, last month they had their first homicide in over 47 years.
