Pierre has its cliques or a cliquish mentality. Its like living anywhere its what you make of it.

Pierre is a nice town and most people are nice.
housing is high and so is the cost of living.
most of the good paying jobs are hard to get, if you dont know someone.
To me its very hot and dry in the summer.
Windy 90% of the time.
I am looking to move.but some of the people here are the nicest, you will ever meet.

$12/hour job here is a well paying job by Pierre standards. I am wanting to get out of this town. A decade here is plenty.

I was in Pierre about 2yrs ago (to say I was there), and can't add much more: isolated, either is for you/or not. At the time (midday), only found 1 restaurant open to the West of the capitol complex. I believe it's probably the smallest state capitol (smaller than Santa Fe) I've been in (to drive through). The time zone changes at Ft. Pierre (if you're not paying attention). Otherwise, not much more. Thanks, and good luck!

I'm not sure what you mean by west there. True there isn't much directly west, but there are only a few blocks before the river. If you go north, that's where most of the eating places are, on Sioux.
Oh, and the time changes at Ft. Pierre, even if you are paying attention.

Pierre is a nice town. but to me its going down hill. when I first moved here 8 years ago it was wonderful. But the crime rate has gone up.you have to be politicly correct even if its wrong. Its lost that everyone welcome feel.there,s still nice people around town.but there,s alot of people who look down on you if your a little diffrent than them

While I want out of town, the crime rate has not faced a noticeable increase in crime rate. For the most part the police department is solving cases.
In 10 year I can't say that Pierre has gone down hill, nor improved. Its Pierre. I am still looking for a way out of here. But that is a personal preference more than anything.

All very interesting reading. I was contacted by an employer today, expressing interest in my interviewing for a professional position. Of 3 cities where the position can be officed, Pierre is one of them.
The decision-making of my wife and me will be easier than many, as we are "empty-nesters" and children are scattered from Peoria, IL to Portland, OR. I am interested in knowing how a middle-aged couple would fare in Pierre. Some of the comments are already helpful, but if anyone of the same "vintage" has additional input, I would welcome it.
NOTE: we are currently living in a nice small town (~10k residents), so the size of Pierre would be a natural for us.
Thanks to all who have, and will, post on this subject.

A huge plus is that you'd be living right along the River. Even if you don't fish, I'm sure you'd enjoy strolls there or getting in a boat or canoe and just floating along.
We're middle aged so I can identify with some of your needs. You probably want a few things to do, but mainly peacefulness, friendly neighbors, low crime, etc. I don't live in Pierre, but have been there several times and it looks like you may have found the right spot.
