Hey Neva, thanks for posting and I'm glad you're happy for us. SO FAR we have managed to escape what parts of the country are going through. But there have been a few warnings issues by the Gov. about possible job losses and how they were working on getting things set up if it happens. He felt it would mainly be in the manufacturing area.

They also came out with some new numbers statewide that that is 3.2% which is just wonderful.

Awesome info, Neva! We just have to cross our fingers that it stays in the positive.

I'm honestly shocked to see Rapid City on that list. Sure, unemployment is very low here, but I always hear that it can be very difficult to find a good job.

I don't know, I just don't see that as always a good thing. I view our low unemployment rate as the fact that pay is so bad we all have to work to pay the bills. I wonder how many in SD have two jobs.

Agreed. On one hand, we all have to work to pay bills anywhere, and I personally had 2 jobs from the age of 16 to about 30. There were good and bad sides to it.

Numbers can be misleading depending on how they are put together... Things are tough all over these days.

I wish we could find some numbers about underemployment. That might tell us more about how things are. Unfortunately, the Bureau of Labor Statistics says it doesn't track underemployment.

Think-tank EPI comes up with an underemployment number and says its at a 14-year high. Of course, they use that figure to support their case for a stimulus package, but its interesting to see what they have to say.

Here's there explanation of underemployment from an older page:

Quote:
A more comprehensive measure of labor utilization is underemployment. This Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) concept includes the unemployed, discouraged workers (people who looked for work at some point over the past year, but have given up due to lack of prospects), involuntary part-timers (part-time workers who would prefer full-time work), and a smaller group of people who want to work but face a barrier such as lack of transportation or child care. The figure below plots both unemployment and underemployment.
Unemployment numbers are nice, but certainly don't paint a well-rounded picture of those in/out of the job market.

Try Rapid City. We just got a bunch of new stores and there are more to come soon with the next phase of Rushmore Crossing starting up.
