Great posts everyone!!

Our son has a couple of game systems but they were purchased after the prices dropped -- be damned if I'll pay more than $150 for any of those things. We have the same tv's we've had for the last 6+ years and 2 of them were bought second hand. We have a DVD player that cost less than $80. You see where I'm going here.

We do have a cell phone, but I'm with Jammie -- it's pay as you go, buy cards for minutes and use sparingly. Also, I do not EVER use it while the truck is moving, I'll pull over to make a quick call.

The other day I got behind some woman who -- no s**t -- was putting on mascara while driving west on Madison street, and what really had my blood pressure up was the baby seat in the back seat!!

I'm another one who uses those "other" words and would occasionally like to have a megaphone in the truck as I pass buttheads so I can say "duh??"

LOL!! I like the megaphone idea! I used to have a friend who put on makeup while driving. She's been in lots of accidents and blames every one of them on the other driver, and wonders why her insurance premiums are so high! And why the judges are so stupid. Talk about brick wall!!

The baby in the back seat would rile me up! Having no regard for the person in the crosswalk is one thing, but to put one's baby in so much danger is purely insane and monumentally stupid! Wonder if any of her friends have considered turning her in to CPS.

Snowbird, thank you for being one of the ones who pulls over to talk. You sound like a sensible person about all the things we've been talking about. You're probably teaching your son some common sense too, for which you deserve a huge pat on the back!!

I enjoy the conveniences and really use my DVD player a lot -- I do mindless, boring work at home, so anything that keeps me entertained while I do it is considered a tool. And my computer and digital camera are essential to my business, as I sell online. I like having the phone because we have several storms every year that knock the power out. Last December it was out for 4 days. The cell phone insures that I can contact someone with a computer, so I can keep track of my business.

It's interesting how we're almost able to experience what life was like in our grandparents and great grandparents day, when the power goes out. I still have running water even though it's cold, flashlights instead of a kerosene lantern, and a battery operated radio, if I get so bored I can't stand the silence, but I have to say I feel like a pioneer cooking over an open fire when I use my tiny sterno stove to make coffee or heat up a can of soup. In a way, I look forward to the brief periods of having no power, because it keeps me grateful for the conveniences I do have.

I just saw a new article about some teenage girls in Afghanistan being attacked by militants on their way to school. Extreme Muslims don't think girls/women should be educated and to discourage them from attending school, the men sprayed acid all over them terribly burning their skin. This happened yesterday and today, not one girl attended school, for fear of being attacked.

The next time someone is tempted to claim they are from Canada, rather than America, I hope they think about this. You can blame Bush for everything under the sun and say we should have never gone to war, and in many examples, you may well be right. That does not change the fact that people like this are the ones who attacked us, and will attack us again. That does not change the fact that some of the motivation for the two wars is not only to attempt to minimize the potential for them to successfully attack us, but also to keep things like the above from happening even on their own soil.

I expect the first comments to be something along the lines of "ok, if human rights plays into it, what about Africa?". I can't answer that completely, but I'd speculate comfortably, that because Africa does not pose a greater threat to us, it gets pushed to the bottom of the list of priorities... I don't know.

Still proud to be an American.

Due to recent budget cuts, the stock market crash, and the rising cost of electricity, gas and oil, the light at the end of the tunnel has been turned off. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Sincerely,

The Government

Looks like the government needs to see the light, the light of common sense and efficient but effective operation.
