Another hanging...
Thomas Egan was convicted of murder and hanged in Minnehaha County in 1880 or 1881. What facts make his execution particularly interesting?

What crime was the first execution in Rapid City for?
Hint: there is a lake in the Black Hills named after their crime, and the tree from which they were hung has the name of the crime as well.

Well, lets see. There's a Horsethief Lake. Were they rustling sheep? Just kidding. Horsethieves?

Yep! Horsethief Lake and Horsethief Tree on Skyline Drive were named for the first capital punishment crime in Rapid City... horse theft. Supposedly, the criminal were camped out at a lake in the hills hiding when they were discovered. The lake was named in their "honor"!

That's part of it - it took 3 drops to get the job done. Also, he was innocent. Years later a step-daughter made a death bed confession that she'd killed Egan's wife...
