Those were small towns at one time and are still town sights. They were whistle stops or places to take on water or wood or coal and sometimes passengers.
But they are along the track. Back then the road was also along the track. But the state, expanding, put in roads elsewhere, better terrain, etc. So now these towns are 10 miles or so off the highway.

Newbie jumping in.
Which infamous horse thief and murderer, after the death of his own daughter, was known for paying the doctor's bills to save other sick little girls?

kbat,
I gotta ask. Was this person accused of murder and of being a horse thief? Or was he convicted. haha Makes a big diff. In South Dakota, every one that was convicted, was hung and therefor not going to contribute to other little girls health care.

He was pardoned by the governor. He only stole horses from Indian reservations and would probably have gotten away with that, but eventually his victims began retaliating by stealing local ranchers' horses to replace their own and a reward was offered for his arrest. As far as I know he was never actually put on trial for any of the murders.

OK, more hints!
He was born in Texas but spent a lot of time in South Dakota. He was well-known in northern Nebraska too.
His daughter's name was Lulu.
He was known as the "King of Horse Thieves."
After his pardon, he went on to open saloons in several states. At one such saloon in Wyoming, he got involved in a drunken brawl between his patrons, one of whom was wounded. He was arrested for selling alcohol without a license and died after becoming ill in prison.
