OK, here's one for you SD history buffs.
What was the name of the 1st railroad in the region & who started it?
Hint: Both the name and the company which started it exists "no more".

1st Railroad
The Dakota Southern - Vermillion to Sioux City. 1872 or 1873? That's not the same Dakota Southern which headquarters in Chamberlain these days.
The Winona & St. Peter - from Minnesota to a terminus at Gary, SD. 1878?
Can't help you with who owned them!

windtimber,
I have no reason to doubt your answer and glad there is someone out there with info like
you have provided. Plain and simple, I neglected to mention the area I was looking for. It was the West River region. So, can anyone give the answer to this updated trivia question?

He was probably right about "East River Region", I can not say for sure. The answer to "West River" area has not been answered.

OK, I'll try again. The Homestake Mining Company? Originally owned by George Hearst and lastly by Barrick Gold. That's a guess by the way.

Yes Windtimber. Homestake started the Black Hills & Ft. Pierre Railroad. This railroad was
sold in 1902 to the now known Burlington Line.

Time to rejuevinate this thread.
Today's trivia question is, "How many inches of snow is Jammie going to get tonight?" Weatherman says, "Oh noooooo. it don't look good."
How many sets of chains is Jammie going to need to get to work tomorrow?

OMG, you are a riot!!! My guess is zero inches of snow and I don't even own a pair of chains for my car.

Come on gang, if we all chip in, we can hire some crop duster to seed the clouds above Jammie's home town. Maybe twice if we come up with enough cash.
