Yikes! Those are some familiar names.
Bad situations for a lot of malls, it appears.

How much of this is factual and how much is speculation. Some of these have been in the works for a while.
Its not the first time large businesses have gone out of business. Cuts are made and the world will keep turning.

Stores are pretty much aware and prepared for a slow holiday season. Retail spending is down a whole 1%.

I have seen on the local news about those e-mails and seen an e-mail from a coworker. Some of it is speculation and some of it is true. To my understanding, Linen and Things is closing all of their stores and Circuit City is closing some of their stores and having a hard time in recent years competing with Best Buy.
I forsee Sioux Falls holding its own with its stores (and many of its chain stores are still generating decent business), although not completely immune to the national problems.
A lot of store expansions have been put on hold or stores have been shed in the early 1990s. One I can remember in the mid 1990s was Phar-Mor in Sioux Falls.
I agree with rjl78 assessment of the topic.
Things will eventually turn around for the better.

That's similar to an email I've seen, too. The ones I've gotten have also said that you should not buy any gift certificates from those stores. SO, that kinda makes you wonder if some one could've put that list together because they would have something to gain if people didn't buy gift certificates at those stores. Also, it could discourage people from buying gifts there for fear that there will be no store for returning items to. It's just a thought because it's very possible that there will be store closings.

Circuit City stores... most recent (? how many)Best Buy is better anyway, they have better prices and more products for the most part
J. Jill closing all stores
GAP closing 85 stores
Footlocker closing 140 stores more to close after January
Wicks Furniture closing down
Levitz closing down remaining stores
Bombay closing remaining stores
Zales closing down 82 stores and 105 after January.
Whitehall closing all stores
Piercing Pagoda closing all stores Taylor- 117 stores nationwide are to be shuttered
Lane Bryant, Fashion Bug, and Catherine's to close 150 store nationwide
Eddie Bauer to close stores 27 stores and more after January
Cache will close all stores
Talbots closing down all stores I think this is the nature of the market and competition in general. I think people are tired of paying top dollar for products made in China or Malaysia, etc.
Disney closing 98 stores and will close more after January. I'm sorry but does anyone really need a $75 Mickey Mouse sweatshirt?
Linens and Things closing all stores This has been ongoing. Bed, Bath, and Beyond must be winning.
Movie Galley closing all stores Movie Gallery is not bad, but NetFlix is a better value and you don't have to drive anywhere! With Gas at $4.00 (and it will be again), it is cheaper to use netflix and they have better selection
Pacific Sunware closing stores My Nephew works for them, he says this is inaccurate. Apparently, they have some "sister stores" with another name that are closing but I can't remember the name.
Pep Boys Closing 33 stores See my comment about Home Depot/Lowes below. Auto parts stores need to hire people that actually know about cars... I was in a Pep Boy's in Daytona a few months ago trying find some specific kind of spark plugs for my car. The counter sales person was lost. You'd have thought I was trying to buy parts to fix an aircraft carrier.
Sprint/ Nextel closing 133 stores Verizon gives much better service here where I live. If you can't keep up with the competition, you lose business...
Macys to close 9 stores after January
Dillard's to close some stores.
JC Penney closing a number of stores after January I'd bet most of these are in malls that are way past their prime anyway...
Ethan Allen closing down 12 stores. Ethan Allen used to be a big name in AMERICAN made furniture, it was high priced but excellent quality 20 years ago. Now, it is all imported junk as far as I know. To me this is not a loss. Just a reflection of the current economy.
Wilson Leather closing down all stores For the most part, $300 leather jackets, none of them made in the USA. No thanks.
Sharper Image closing down all stores Mostly high tech junk that nobody needs
K B Toys closing 356 stores The attention span of kids today is about 90 times shorter than it was years ago. You buy them a $50 piece of plastic, they like it for 15 minutes and never touch it again.
Home Depot closing 15 stores
Lowes to close down some stores Too many new Lowes and Home Depot stores were built in the new neighborhoods that sprung up in the housing boom. Now that the boom is over, many of the overpriced subdivisions are in foreclosure and emptying out, there are no customers to go to these stores. It wasn't very good planning on their part. When these stores first opened, you could ask just about any employee anything and get some good advice. They used to hire skilled people in various trades that could actually help you with home improvement questions. Now, they hire low wage people with virtually no knowledge in anything and it's hit or miss to get an answer on anything
It is good advice to be cautious about buying gift cards under the current circumstances. However, this is one of those "The Sky is Falling" emails sent out to spread fear. If you really look at the stores that are closing, there are reasons beyond the economy in play. Poor customer service, high prices for imported, low quality items made by people earning $10 a day or less, bad locations, not keeping up with the competition, etc. In construction, when the boom was in full swing, there were plenty of contractors springing up all over to keep up with demand. They had no experience and did shoddy work. The cycles tend to weed out these kinds of businesses...
