Trail King, one of largest employers in city, sends home 42 workers; other layoffs reported |* The Daily Republic *| Mitchell, South Dakota
Ok, call me doom and gloom, but things aren't getting better here. There have been several places that have done cutbacks in hours and now lay-offs are beginning. What an awful time of year for this to happen! SO, if anyone plans on relocating in this area, wait until springtime. Hopefully things will improve.

Things are going to get worse before they get better. Things didn't tank overnight and things will not fix themselves over night either.
The economy tends to run in cycles times of growth and times of loss.

42 states are running budget deficits right now.
The other 8 states that were running surpluses had a greater reliance on energy industries that did well in this bubble period that just ended.

Oh my!!! It's up to 42 now? The latest I'd heard was 38 and I couldn't believe it. Our state has one more year of money and then I don't know what we're going to do. Hopefully they'll find some way to keep us going without having to look to the federal govt. for more money.

I remember reading/hearing about our neighbors to east... Minnesota expects to have a deficit in the billions!

Well, on the evening news (Kelo), the Gov. said that our state is NOT in a recession. I'd like to believe him and I HOPE he knows what he's talking about, but I remember all too well months that went by that the federal govt. kept telling us this isn't a recession. Then they said we are in one and have been in one for months.
Things may start turning around by springtime.

I hope so! I just wish the state would lift the hiring freeze, so I could continue my interview that they so rudely interrupted!

I'm sorry. I didn't realize that a hiring freeze was what the problem was. All we can do is hope that things turn around, but I stand by my belief that we could also be hit with the recession. More bad news today.
News, Weather and Sports for Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa
There's also a news story on Kelo that talks about 47 (I think) people getting laid off at the casino in Flandreau. They said it had nothing to do with the recession, but more to do with new automation. I dunno~likely story.
