There was also a small article in our local paper yesterday about GEHL laying off some people. I think Debey has a bit more info on that then I do. I know it's north of here, but can't remember which town it's in.

It is in Madison. I have heard about it on KELO and Argus Leader. My prayers go out to those who are laid off and their families and hope that God helps them through this challenging time.

Yes, I called to find out what my status was, and the guy doing the hiring said he had my name on his list to interview for the position. But the day before they had announced the hiring freeze, so all he could do was hold onto the list...I am still up for the job, whenever they lift the freeze. He did at least ask me a few questions specific to the position, so I know he wasn't just trying to placate me.

Nebraska Radio Network » Recession will get worse before getting better
This is a similar article to what was in our local paper today, but I can't seem to find it in our online paper.
There's also an article that says food stamp recipients are on the rise in our state~probably like all over. Several people are finding themselves jobless.
One thing that confused me is when they said this one will be worse then in 1991. I didn't realize we had a problem then. Maybe it's because the late 70s/early 80s recession was the worst I've been through so it sticks out in my mind.

I have seen similar comments on KELO and Argus Leader, but they were commenting that the recession would be worse than 2001. Which I think that it will be. My guess is that the next 4-6 months will be bumpy and the recission will bottom out sometime this summer or fall. The economy goes in cycles and the toughest part is when it goes in a downward cycle and a number of people's lives get turned upside down during the challenging times. We as a people and society need to pull together and fight pessimism and see what we can do to make our nation and world a better place. Challenging times are tough for the moment but may be blessings in diguise as they bring a number of people back to sensisbility and add character if taken in good stride. And the cycle of life continues.

Chris, I stand corrected. I believe the article in our paper also said 2001 and NOT 1991 like I posted. I actually didn't realize we had one since the late 70s/early 80s. Sorry I posted wrong info. Well, I was only a decade off.

Yea, I think it was right after September 11, 2001 if I remember right but I don't think it was anywhere close to what this one is or the 1980's one.

You're right because I didn't see much going on in 2001 as far as a recession. Yea, the airlines and tourist destinations suffered a bit cause people were scared. There probably were a few cutbacks or hours cut in those areas. But in the 70s/80s there just weren't any jobs. We just scraped by and a lot of others did, too.
BUT today I was reminded of some of the old stories of how horrible the 1930s were. We have a family member in an assisted living center that we see quite often. He lived through the 30s and vividly remembers things like some people having NO food. If you were starving, the govt. would give you a chunk of cheese and a can of rancid lard that they've have thrown out anyway. I was thankful that all my ancestors at least hadn't been quite that desperate even though they were suffering then.
No food stamp office to turn to~no unemployment office to go to~social security hadn't been put in place then yet~no food pantries, etc. When the shoes wore out, you just wore cloth around your feet and tied what was left of the soles on so you'd have SOME protection from the cold and snow. And that's the decade we hit a lot of record highs AND record lows.
Fortunately, we've all been lucky. Even what seemed to me as a very trying time 30 years ago was nothing compared to that.

Very true Jammie. My grandmother lived on a ranch near Winner during the Depression and they had absolutely NOTHING. It was then that her father started bootlegging. My grandma told me that grasshoppers would come in swarms and eat everything in sight. She said that even fence posts were chewed down and their cattle was killed.
My aunt's family farmed in the early '80s and they too had a very difficult time making it. Finances back then just got way out of line.
By the way, a buddy of mine that goes to school in Mitchell was just laid off from Cabela's. I guess they're cutting back now too. I haven't heard of any major layoffs West River but I'm guessing it's just a matter of time.
