I understand that Aberdeen is doing better than in years past with a sizable influx of jobs and industry to the city. In the past year, there has been some residential construction and an influx of people moving to the city.

Danny,
Were all of the places actually hiring or were they just places your friend thought he might have a shot at working? That would make a big difference. If they were all hiring, I'd bet he'll be getting a call. IF NOT, tell him to go back again. I can tell you for sure that many times I was running adds and needed to hire someone because I was SO busy. The problem was I was TOO busy to really take the right amount of time with the applications and a lot of them slipped by. Several times, I would end up hiring someone just because they came by at the right time on the right day when I had a few minutes to talk to them... So, tell him to keep trying.
I forgot to mention, people that do hiring for small companies usually focus on something else 99.99% of the time and hiring ends up being a diversion from their regular duties. These kinds of people don't actually like to hire anyone because it's risky and stressful. You never know for a fact you are getting a good/great employee. So they are stressed out. People looking for a job are also stressed out because they need work. The best thing to do is relax, be positive, keep trying. If you go to a place that is hiring and the hiring manager is obviously too busy to talk and looks stressed, ask if there is a better time you might come back and whether or not you need to bring anything specific along they might want to review. You might even say, "You look pretty busy, I can come back at another time if that works better for you.". Sometimes this will go a long way.
Best of luck and God Bless.

Aberdeen, my "home turf", is doing very well actually. There's been many jobs added. One thing that the city lacks is apartments...for those just starting out, or those that can't afford to own a home.

I have heard that from others. One of my friends from USD lived there the first year of college before moving to the Elk-Point-Vermillion area afterwards. This was about four years ago. He mentioned that he had a very hard time finding an apartment and ended up renting a trailer. Apartments may help Aberdeen and young families and people who are getting a start. The lack of apartments may turn off young people out of college or college students who want to remain in Aberdeen.

That's good advice BH, I'll be sure to pass that along. My buddy is a college student from Rapid City who goes to school in Mitchell. He was working at Cabela's but was recently laid-off along with much of their staff. I know he's applied at WalMart, Ruby Tuesday, and a bowling alley but he says he is having a very difficult time getting any calls back and when he calls them they just say they'll hold his application for 90 days.
One reason he may be having a hard time is because he is a college student and his schedule is busy already. They may think he is unreliable because he is 19-20 too.
Thanks again!

I remember seeing a news story, maybe a year ago, that the apartment rental capacity was in the 90% range.
All of my friends up there, who have had/still do have an apartment, are in an apartment that was converted from a large house. Apartment complexes are few and far between.

I've kind of figured Cabela's has been having a tough time in the current economy. I'm on their email list and I get sales emails from them, it seems like every day or two. I like the Cabela's stores but I'm concerned they won't be able to keep them all open through this down turn... I don't see how they can be making a profit with their huge overhead. Anyone know what their earnings (or losses) were for '08?

BH, that is really good advice.
Danny, according to the newspaper, Ruby Tuesday is looking for hosts and servers. It's been in there several times.
Has he thought about checking for work at the Daily Republic? I know they're often looking for people to do inserting and they have a morning shift and an evening shift. I doubt that they'd run more then 3 or 4 hours a day. They're also looking for substitute drivers because that's in the paper quite often.
Not sure if he'd be interested, but McDonald's also has an ad in the paper all the time. It says they start at 7.50 per hour and closers start at 8.00 per hour. Maybe he'd be willing to flip burgers until the economy picks up?
Also, Pepsi is often looking for young, strong guys to load their trucks.
If I think of any more suggestions or hear of anything else, I'll let you know.

Hutchinson Layoffs Total 100 in Eau Claire
Just me again posting about more bad news. I can't find the most current article, but in today's daily paper they said that Hutchinson laid off 275 workers in Sx. Falls which is half their work force.

This is a little off-topic, but Aberdeen had a low temperature of -42F last night
