They did. They mentioned several places around here that broke their record lows for the day and Aberdeen was one of them. There is another small town right on the border that got even lower then that.

Thankfully, tonight is our last super cold night~at least that's what they're predicting and I really hope they're right. This is getting old cause Dec. was very cold.

Pollock (north of Mobridge) had a low of -47, which was the coldest spot in the nation, tied with Garrison, North Dakota.

The low in Sioux Falls was around -23. I had to work at 7 am, and I was stupid and didn't plan for it. I was 10 minutes late for work . My car really really struggled to start up, but it did. My trusty Honda!
I saw a three-car accident on the way to work, so the very frigid temps must have made the roads icy?

More layoffs in city reported |* The Daily Republic *| Mitchell, South Dakota

I thought this would stop, but in yesterday's paper they had an article saying that Hub City in Aberdeen had laid off 49 people. Now today there's another story about lay-offs.

Our state unemployment rate was not even 3% just a few months ago. The most recent rate that I can find is 3.4%, but they run a month behind in their stats and there have been a lot of layoffs this past month.

It's getting to the point that I wouldn't encourage anyone to move here right now unless they already have employment lined up. We're still doing well compared to the rest of the country, but you can't go out and get employment in a day anymore like you could in the past. It could be difficult right now. I've scanned the Rapid City Journal and the Sioux Falls Argus Leader and their employment ads are pretty scarce, too. Ours are really down from past years.

GE's cutbacks have affected the Rapid City call center as well. The article never says how many were laid off but the call center employs about 300 people.

It's really sad to hear. This doesn't affect South Dakota, but Circuit City just announced that they are closing its 567 stores in the US.

Yes, unfortunately I saw that, too. In a way, the rest of the economy will eventually affect us more and more. We have so many businesses, especially manufacturing, that depends on out of state orders for us to keep our employees on the payroll.

Very true...and looking at the grim numbers from Gov. Rounds about the state deficit. I'm really confident that things will turn around...maybe not for a while, but I think they will.

HI IMT. There were a few good job links posted a while ago so I know that others will post more. Here's the one that I thought was good~

KELOLandEmployment.com

On the left hand side, you can chose your location and type of employment you're looking for. It looks like they cover most of the larger towns in the state.

As far as diversity, Sioux Falls might be your best bet. Rapid City is probably becoming more diverse, too. Good luck to you. Right now we're doing better then most states, but we're seeing a bit of a slump here, too.

Grew up in Sioux Falls. Graduated from Washington in 63, joined USAF for 4 yrs. Really no jobs then, Morrells?

Tried to move back 10yrs later. Found a great job, it was temporary, but in late october, and oh so cold, so me and the Bassett Hound jumped in the Peugeot, that still had California plates on it, and headed back to Santa Monica. Got a job in Tucson before we made it. Still here in S Az, after an 8yr break back in Santa Monica 80s. Just the mention of cold, and no work, brought back some memories. 80s here today. Time to move down Jammie. Know were you can get space rent for camper, or motorhome, for $130. a mo.
